umm...
It could be the sway bar but I dought it. I think it is that toeque arm. It connects your rearend to your tranny. That would explain the noises easily.

torque arm
The torque arm connects to the transmission by a rubber mounth. It can be removed with a socket. There should be two bolts bolting it on. The torque arm conencts dirrectlly to the rear end. Usually on teh passenger side. There are 2 bolts and nuts holding the arm in place. If this is the first time taking it off you may want to buy a torch (to heat the bolts, makes it alot easier) and some wd 40.
It is not hard but if it is the first time it may take about 40 minutes.
There are aton of aftermarket torque arms around.
You probably need a new mount to the transmission too. There is probably worn out and cause the arm to come loose after hitting a bump or something.

if it is a t56 , or something with diffrent demisions that the tranny from the factory, then it will matter.
i think anyway. i could have sworn you had to actualy modify the torque arm for a t56.

Here's the only reference pic of one I have (not the best either since I wan't taking a pic of it), keep in mind, it's on a 5speed. I might be able to get a pic of an auto later tonight since the trans from my camaro is getting ready to be donated to my friends truck.

It dose matter what tranny you have and I have never heard of someone removing the torque arm but you might be able to do it,,??? I know if you have a 350 tranny (3 speed) you will need a bracket that is sold by B&M to have a place to bolt to.But if you really have a 700r4 then you should have a place for a bracket to bolt to the back of the tranny and the other 1/2 of the bracket locks to the first on the bottom and has bolts holding it all together on the top,,with rummer bushings on the insides of both 1/2s'
Hope that helps.

Yes it would be bad.It stablizes the pinion angle of the driveshaft in relation from the rear axle to the transmission. It suppose to also stop the flexing of the rear I think.

looks to me like the bracket itself is damaged, you may need to go to a junkyard and get the whole assm. (both brackets and the rubber bushing)

Don't weld it...you just need a small bracket that wrap around the tip of the arm and bolts to the bracket on the tranny...it will have a piece of rubber insulator mounted to it . Sandwich the tip between the two rubber pieces and bolt it on the top.
I can also see where the arm has been making contact with the floor pan upon accelerating.
Do not drive the car until this gets fixed!!

Might try a salvage yard first...make sure it is from 5-speed thirdgen, as the automatics used a different style mount. V6 and V8 pieces will be the same. I'm not sure if this is a parts-store part or not

From the looks of it, an 'engineer' got ahold of that and couldn't get it back together so it turn into a f-it project.
You don't really need the part that is bolted to the tranny as it appears to only be bent upwards to 'hook' the torque arm when it swings towards the ground. With a little bending/hammering you should be able to get that fairly close to it;'s original shape (red line in pic). All you need after that is the rubber mount and the outside retaining piece which is the same for auto or manual (yellow). If you can't find one, you could have some one bend you up some flat metal to close in shape to retain the rubber mount and then weld it (the bent flat stock to the other original half)together. A temporary/emergency fix would be to put some hose clamps around it and snug them up. It would at least be a little more peace of mind than (what looks like) a bent half of a bracket and some speaker wire.

some people at junk yards arent too swift... ask them for the Torque Arm Mounting Plate from your model/year car with a 5 speed manual. If they still look baffled, tell them its the part on the tailshaft of the tranny. Your DAMN lucky you didnt kill yourself driving like that. If that would have caught something on the road, your car would have gone end over end.
Dude... DO NOT DRIVE your car until you get that fixed!! As previously mentioned, you're damn lucky that you haven't busted through the floorboard or poll vaulted that car yet!
That long arm, which is now just dangling loose, keep the rear axle from twisting itself out from under the car during accelerating or downshifting.
Thing about this... When you nail the gas down that front of the car raises up. The reason for this is when under torque, the rear axle housing is trying to spin. That long bar (a/k/a torque arm) prevents that from happening, raises the frontend so that wieght is transfered to the rear of the car for traction.
So, do you kind of get the picture of what can happen to your car if you drive around without that bar mounted properly?
Good luck...
-Mike

You can drive around without it connected but it is not recommended. The arm will only make contact with the ground when you give it more gas then nessicary in reverse. I've broke two mounts. As far as I know there are no aftermarket versions available. The Spohn torque arm relocates the mount to the x-member if I'm not mistaken. I'd try your GM parts counter.
