Sometimes I hate owning a third-gen...

This is more a rant than a question but I just have to get this out...

So while attempting to make my custom third brake light I find out that half the light doesn't work. I call up the local Chevrolet parts and repair depot and ask them for a bulb.

Me: Hi, the bulb on my 3rd brake light doesn't work, could you find a replacement? This is for an 87 camaro.
Them: No, sorry, I can't find a bulb for you that will fit.
Me: Well could you guys find out what's wrong with the bulb I have right now, maybe you can fix it.
Them: Nope.
Me: Why not?
Them: The whole piece is sealed together, can't get to it.
Me: You've got to be kidding....
Them: Nope. You've got to get the entire light assembly.
Me: How much will that cost me?
Them: Not sure, we don't have them.
Me: Why not?
Them: They were discontinued. Back in 1995
Me: Aaargh!

This part is so little I wouldn't think it'd be so hard to find. And what did Chevrolet do to the light system, cement them to the bulbs??

-edit-
And it's not just the light. What where they thinking when they put in the rear speakers? I tried to change them and found out I had to cut some of the mesh stuff becuase it was superglued to the car! Superglued! And who'd have thought I'd have to take the seatbelt and armrest off to get the rear speaker anyway??

Still can't help but love the car on a whole though...

Well that guy is lazy or just plain stupid. There are 3 or 4 screws in the back of the the light assembly unscrew them and you should be able seperate the back part and get to the bulbs. You can get the bulbs from any autoparts house. Take the bulb in and compare it with the others, I wish I could remember what kind they were. As for the super glue I'm 99.9 % sure that a previous owner of the car put it there, cause I've never heard of of gm supergluing parts together.

oh my word!!! how did that idiot get a job at a dealership, geez i could be a frigen supervisor there for crists sakes. anyways yah take the two swrews out that hold the brake light in, then there are 4 philips screws behind it then you can remove each light, be warned though as if i recall right those bulbs are expensive for some odd reason

if you are talking about the 3rd brake light in the spoiler, those are high intensity bulbs. they are little bulbs that should have 2 little prongs coming of off them and they bend easy and i dont think you want to touch the bulbs with your fingers. that can make them blow. the part # at advanced auto and autozone is 891. i think there is a total of 5 in the 3rd brake light housing and they are like 5.00 or 6.00 a piece. hope this helps.

Tell me about it. It took me three stores to find a 577 bulb for my third brake light on the wing. It was like finding the holy grail or something because I picked up the only set of 577 bulbs that was available at an Autozone.

People that work at dealerships for the most part are morons......

They want as much money as possible....

I would suggest going with www.gmpartsdirect.com, they are very helpfull and can answer most questions....

That was . I had to replace bulbs in my car when I first got it. I had never worked on a thirdgen car before doing it and it took 10 minutes. I went right to the parts place and picked up and then figured out how to do the installation.

thats BS that a chevy dealership doesn't have parts for a car made in the 80s!!!!!
I went to a local dealership this week and ordered some parts (a center bulb, and some electrical stuff) and all put one was in stock, and the other will be in buy the end of the week.

the guy at the dealership was probably too lazy to help you. you should talk to his boss.

and about the rear speakers: i didn't have to take the seatbelt and armrest off. also, i didn't find any super glue. pics of my install

Have also had problems of trying to get anything from my dealership. Have been there six times wanting to get parts and each time they say the same thing have been discontinued. They dont even check on the computer. Got fed up so I have been getting my parts from a dealership in Minnesota and I live in South Carolina. So far everything that I have inquired about they can get. There just lazy I guess

mjamerson3, where do you live in SC. I am in Gaffney SC and there is a great parts man at the local GMC, Pontiac dealership here. (Wallace White) The I can take him (Roger) an old part # and he will cross reference it and find the new # for it and usually have it in a couple of days if not the next day. He has not only gotten me parts for my 88 IROC but also for my 70 SS396 Chevelle and my 71 cloned SS454 Chevelle.

Okay, thanks guys! Stupid dealerships.

About the rear speakers, the superglue was probably added in by some stupid owner, but I know for a fact that you must take out the seatbelt and armrest. I'm driving a convertable too, that might make a difference. Actually, it probably does becuase my rear speakers where 6x6 not 6x9.

And on the issue of the brake light, I'll try going somewhere else. Plus, I'm not talking about a spoiler light, but the one on the back of the trunk lid. Any 3rd gen convertable will have it and most other non-hatchback camaros will too. Should be pretty much the same though.

Thanks again! :hail:

I'm sorry, I have to reply about that third brake light. One of the last times my car was at the dealership, they told me I had no bulbs in that light at ALL. They ended up putting in 5 halogen bulbs.

The guy you talked to was a complete jacka$$ who apparently did feel like getting up to check on anything. I think I'd tell a supervisor, honestly. That's just crap.

I don't mean to come off sounding like an ******* here, but...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!

A bulb is out...look how it's put together, take it apart, and get a new bulb. No rocket science there. No need to call Chevy. They don't make the bulbs.

Reading stuff like this, sometimes makes me sorry I own a thirdgen.

...and it's convert*i*ble...hookt on fonicz werked 4 mei

I'll say one thing about a dealership, when no garage in town could figure out why my car would not start - the dealership fixed the problem. They charged me an arm and a leg for it, but they got it to start when no one else could.

I only take my car to dealership as a last resort. Very last resort.

I have never had to take my car to the dealership. I've only been there 3 times. 2 to buy simple parts that they should have "the door lock trim" "window crank handles". And sadly to see a 84 Z with t's I could have bought, but now sits collecting dust in the owners garage never to be used again
