Calling all Ram Air II hood owners - Are you happy with them?

It's been awhile since the fiberglass Ram Air II hoods have been out on the market, and I am considering buying one for my GTA, although I have had a lot of pressure not too due to the fact that they are fiberglass and are prone to warping, splitting and cracking at the hinges.

How are they holding up so far and are you happy with the quality and endurance of them?

aahhhh

dude i'm going to be honest... i think it could be better for 500 bucks......

i keep running into a problem getting it to line up as far as hood fender gaps go...... it's fine one the passenger but a huge 1/2 inch gap on the driver side.. now i know mine has been in a front end impact and had everything replaced and it was ok but i am pretty sure it's the quality of the hood coming into play......

and now i have like dips or ripples in it.. they sure weren't theafter after it was painted but thay showed up all of a sudden....... warpage?

overall it's a awsome hood.. and i have seen a formula and ta 91-92 and the gaps where fine.. no probs...... hers a pic of mine after i spun a rod bearing and had to pull over... i redone her by the way...

I had the same gap problem, tight on one side, HUGE on the other. A good body shop can get it relatively unnoticable, but hey, Should they have to?

I have on area that looks like maybe it sunk a little, its like a crease, only visible in certain lights.

Also, mine his my rad support and wouldnt close all the way, We had to hit part of it with a belt sander to take a lilttle bit away so it wouldnt hit, it wasnt a critical area and was easy work (fiberglass was thick there)

So yeah they have problems, yeah they are easy fixes (except the gaps, thats a bitch) is it worth $500, yes if you are sure you want it, if not, dont waste your money, I wanted mine for over a year, so some little work was nothing.

All fiberglass hoods are going to have some issues, no matter who made them. Its an imperfect material. Fitting, sanding, and reworking to some extent are to be expected, unfortunately. Also, DON'T paint the hood right away, esp if its one of the ones that is always backordered...let it sit out in the sun for awhile, and let all the trapped solvents escape. If you don't let it cure , expect to see dips and waves in the finish later...after you have sanded and painted it. Some glass manufacturers, esp those that make whol bodies, recommend several weeks before painting.

Dont buy the GTAuto hood. Use ASCD instead. Nothing personal against GTAuto, but EVERY pic Ive seen of their hood has been misaligned, rippled, just plain bad for the price. ASCD is a great reputable company, and their products are damn near as perfect as you can get with fiberglass.

Can anyone tell me where to get one of the ascd ram air 2 hoods. I was thinking of getting one from gtauto along with the fourth gen wing as well. If i cant find one of the ascd hoods along with the spoiler i will probably still end up getting the ones from gtauto. Any help from anyone that has the hood would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting getting the RA I hood and the 4th gen style wing combo, so, does ASCD have the same combo?

You might want to do a search on GT Auto on the vendor review board before ordering from them. ASCD's site is http://www.americansportscar.com
They make great products, and the owner Rex is an honest guy. Hawk's and TGR are vendors for them also. I don't think they make the spoilers yet, but Hawk's is coming out with them soon.

Thanks for recommending Hawks. They do have both parts and the hood is cheeper from them. GTAuto charges more for cutting out the holes and putting the screens in but Hawks doesnt. I am waiting to hear back for a total price for both parts including shipping and then i will probably order them. Thanks for your input

A nice plus is that Hawk's will actually send you the part!

Some vendors seem to have missed that concept.:lala:

I am in the same boat as you guys. I am going to buy a 4th gen wing but am not sure if I am going to buy the hood or not. My car is white with black GTA rims. I am going to put the sportline kit on it so it should sit low. Anymore pics?

i've got a '91 Firebird, looking at the fourth gen wing with the ram air II hood, what do ya'll think? It has the ground efx and soon getting WS6 wheels, haven't decided between the '02 wheels or the 00' wheels leaning more towards chrome 00's. Also, re-paint after above mentioned has been installed. Any input would be much apprectiated.

Take it for what it's worth but here's my story...

2-3 years ago my dad bought a RAII hood for his firebird from ramairhoods.com (sponcer of this site) Fit, finish, everything was GREAT. Spot on, not a single prob. Still feel that away now.. It's a great hood.

I liked the fit and finish so good about 1.5 years later I bought one from the same company for my camaro.... Worse mistake I ever made.

Before I go any fruther I will say ramairhood.com did make it right and the lady was great to deal with through this whole nightmare.

Ok right out of the box it looked cheap, diff style than the hood my dad got from em... In fact it was made by a diff company and dropped shipped through ramairhood.

Hood stuck up a good 1/2" above fender on pass side the whole lenght of hood, hit cowl vents and wipers in 3 or 4 diff places, waves all in it, gel coat peeling in spots, uneven line at front, etc etc etc...

I was on the phone with the company with in hours of getting the hood un boxed... She couldn't belive how bad the fit was so I told her I would take clear digital pictures and email to her... She was shocked at what she saw and called it "****".

It's so bad if I was to post the pics on a few sites they probbly wouldn't get another order for a camaro hood lol.

They did make it right for me though and I do give them a big thumbs up for that.. I got a full refund (shipping too) with in a week,in fact 2 weeks before they even sent a truck to pick up the hood (on thier dime) I got my refund.

After that I still wanted a glass hood but cheaper price.. I got to looking at the harwood cowls, I was fixin to order one from summit when I found a 1986 camaro "parts car" in the local paper for $500 that had a harwood bolt on 4" cowl hood, knocking 350 engine, RPM intake, 600 cfm eddy carb, 3.42 rear end, etc etc..

So I ended up buying that car and useing the hood on my '88 and having alot of other usefull parts.

I had that older used harwood cowl on my car since last fall and I'm very happy with it.

Im pretty happy with mine other than it taking hours upon hours to get it to fit right and to get it straight. I got it from ramairhoods.com
