Functional Louvers

I tried to search for it but the search is down sorry. I was wondering if it was possible to remove the hood louvers and cut away the area beneath them and put them back on to make them functional. is it possible, will it work, is it worth it????

i think he means to make each individual louver real, like how they had for the IROC races. im sure you can buy the old hood somehere but as for cutting it away to put real ones there i dont think they sell real louvers so youd have to make them.

I looked at a 86 Z28 in the parking lot out here and it looks like you could drill holes next to each other in between the louvers
and then cut some holes in the hood under the louvers.
Not shure that it would let enough heat out though.
Aftermarket hood may be the way to go.

ya i was either looking into cutting the underneath the louvers or just going with the SS hood, is the SS the best hood for cooling the engine or is there a better one?

How hard was it to cut the blisters to make them open into the engine compartment? I was thinking of doing this on my hood too but wasn't sure if it would weaken the blisters! Thanks!

Of course you can make them functional, that is if you don't mind drilling holes into the hood. It would be very tedious. You would have to drill each louver out and then do that for each one, which I think there is like 20 per side so about 40 of them.

I never liked the fact that the stock louvers were not functional. I don't have an Iroc, but I would just go and buy an SS hood instead of spending so much time on drilling all those holes and slots. To me, my time is more valuable than money.

Cutting the blisters out is easy.
Cutting the Hood is more difficult, I cut A 4in square hole on
each side as far forward as posible, so any water would run
down just aft the radiator and fwd of the pulleys on the engine.
I have better pics of what i did but there at home and I'm out of town for the week.

I made alot of posts about this, seach for "functional louvers" on this and the B/I board when the search is fixed. There would have to be a way to cut the section out except for where it connects to the hood and have a piece slid over to protect the engine from weather when needed. It would be easier with the 91-92 inserts since they are open a little from the back only.
