4th gen mecham wing on 3rd gen
4th gen mecham wing on 3rd gen
this would be an awesome idea.if anyone could photoshop it would be seriously awesome. i know one member put a 4th gen wing on a 3rd gen using bondo because the posts are too short , but i want any aero type wing that looks bigger and has some lip on it. i wish i has the skills to do one on my car but i dont so maybe someon else allready has. lets at least see a photoshop.

I think that would look extremely gay. The wing is rounded and the back of the car isn't. That's my only complaint about the 4th gen wing is that it's rounded to fit the shape of the 4th gen, and when you stick it over a sqare rear end, it looks a bit odd. With the 4th gen wing, it's more subtle and not really obvious, but with that giant thing it is going to be VERY obvious.

How can a wing look gay? I didn't know wings were supposed to be heterosexual.
3rd gens are more wedge shaped than rounded, so our cars look best with a wedge shaped wing or spoiler.
A lot of wings don't look right on our cars because most aftermarket wings do not follow the wedge shape, most of them are curved to match the contours of the more rounded new cars.
I used to like the 4th wing until I saw how rounded it was in the back. I kind of agree with Jim85IROC on this one. In drawing form or photshoped form it looks ok, but in real life, it would probably not look as great as you pictured it, which is my sentiment on a lot of wings.

sorry i didnt make it clear but that is NOT my wing... i wish it was but ive been looking for someone who has one so we can make a mold... im guessing people would really want one... personally i think it is quite badass:rockon:
i think it looks sweet but i don't think it would do any good at high speeds, because of the space between the car and the wing plus that big of a lip will pick the sides of the wing up off the car, but other then that it would be good for a show car
beafedupRS: well those wings are designed by guys who race them at high speeds so to rebut your comment yes those wings do work at high speeds. what do you mean about the space between the wing as in it's too much or too little? but yes it would be nice for a show car but good for racing too.
the black one just doesn't look like it would do any good at high speeds , it has a nice size lip on it but being that big in my opinion will cause it to pick the sides of the wing up and with some high winds at high speeds you could have the sides of the banging up and down on the car (look on the side of the wing where there is no conection to the body) that is what would flap at high speeds. maybee thats why they

Hey! I just registered to this site. I own an '82 Pontiac Firebird and I believe (not 100%sure)it's an MSE edition. At least that's what it says on both doors. It also has a wing similar looking to the one that was photochopped on the white t/a. At the moment, it's not in really good shape but, it will be once I get started on it. I will try to post pic's of it soon so you "experts" can let me know what you think. As you can tell, I don't know much about F-bodies but, I'm looking forward to learning about them.

Welcome to the boards! Glad to see that another early thirdgen firebird owner has made it here. Im sure you will find these boards very useful. Check out the History/Restoration board and post there. There are a few guys that know their stuff about the rare and unusual birds and camaros.
I don't know the actual production numbers for these MSE birds. but they are very hard to come by. I would love to see some pics of your ride! Nice to meet you and again welcome to the boards.
,82pontiac: welcome to the boards. if the wing looks like the one on the white bird it's not the mecham spoiler now if your spoiler looks like the one on the black t/a then we may have to do some biusness.

He's been getting a few requests for it lately. He also said its a very effective wing...Mecham holds the only SCCA Trans Am win that the Trans Am ever won!
If the owner of this wing happens to see this post, or you have one, call Mecham at 623-486-3144.
If you have one you're interested in selling, email me!!!!

But eh white photoshopped one...It might be the lighting, but it looks like a cape on the 3rd gen...

I like that Mecham wing very much. It is just right, aggressive, but not too aggressive and actually flows with the body lines of thirdgens.
How do you lose a mold? They only had one mold or something?
Well, I know those who have a mecham wing are not interested in selling them so it looks like if I want the wing bad enough that I will just have to make one myself.

Mecham I beleive has changed hands since the cars were built, so its likely the mold is either in the hands of one of the employees from the 80s, or destroyed. I'm taking cash to the Nats this year for the specific purpose of buying one of the wings...the guy with the black 85 TA should be there (he was in the winners circle last year and can compete again this year) again. Anyone who wants to part with one, I'll trade them the new spoiler of their choice, plus the decklid drilled to mount it, professionally painted to match their car, plus a little cash for their time and trouble.

With an offer like that, I am sure you will get that wing. You must want that wing very badly. I am just going to handmake one myself, well, maybe not myself but someone is good at fiberglassing. It won't looke exactly like the Mecham wing, but it will be close enough for me.

I really want one for my 85, and to start producing copies of the wing. It does help that I have paint booths at work, and access to free paint, and can do the work myself. The offer is good to anyone who wants to give up their Mecham wing; the cash part will be determined by cost of the replacement wing and shipping.

It was Mecham Racing from 82-85; Mecham Design and Performance 97-present. The original company was DKM Design and Performance (77-80). I would imagine that Dennis and Kyle have had some involvement in each company, but they weren't doing business from 85-97 so there was plenty of time for things to be lost, misplaced etc. I'm no expert on Mecham, so if anyone has anything to add or dispute feel free. I'm just going off their website.
