It is glued on to the plastic frame for the power window motor . Between the glass and the plastic frame is a foam insulator . My mirror glass fell of , cought it before it came completely off. I then used a 2 part epoxy to reattach it to the the plastic frame . My car is a 86 t/a and i couldn't find just a glass insert for it , so i reused the old glass .
I am interested in replacing the "guts" of my mirror. I want to remove everything except the mirror housing itself. My mirror has gone all wonky and I have a replacement that I want to feed thru the door. Any help would be appreciated.
Mine is the manual mirror with the remote switch on the door panel. Dont you remove the four screws from behind the mirror glass itself, then remove the little handle part from the cord and then pull it thru? The hole is very small. I want to keep the mirror housing in place so that I wont have to repaint.
The shop manual for my '84 Z28 has a diagram showing a manual mirror, a remote control mirror operated by a lever, and an electric remote mirror. Under that diagram in a section entitled "Remote Mirror Face Replacement" it says the glass in the remote mirror face is replaced by breaking it. It instructs you to wear the appropriate safety equipment (gloves, eye protection, etc.) and cover the mirror housing and surrounding painted areas (like the door) to avoid damaging the paint. Next you cover the mirror face with tape and break it. Remove the broken glass and fiber pad from the frame, then clean out the frame so the new mirror will stick. To install the new mirror, remove the paper backing to expose the adhesive, center the mirror in the frame and press it on. The section does not specifically address electric mirrors or manual mirrors as something to be handled differently.
Searching the web for my answer I found that only one possibility is to brake the glass then replace it with new one. It would take me a long time to get this glasses because I had to order it to Poland so I try to take it without breaking it.
Try either heat or cold. If the entire assy is off the car, stick it in the freezer for a while. Then see if the glass will pop out.
For heat, use a hair dryer or heat gun. But be careful if using the heat gun. Before you can say, OH ****!, you have already melted something.
It'd sure be nice if someone didn't reanimate half a dozen dead threads to advertise their Youtube channel. I can appreciate the effort that goes into making an instructional video, but wouldn't it just be easier to create a new thread and post all the video links there?
The problem with bumping old threads, is it puts them at the top of the forum, shoving threads where people are asking for help with problems they're having NOW down the page, in favor of threads people have long forgotten about. Then the thread gets even more replies because most people don't read the ENTIRE thread before trying to help out... So no one really sees your link, and it screws over everyone else on the forum.
