Just finished my third '86 IROC rim. I have sanded, sworn, cut myself and stood back in a amazement of what can be achieved. Should I now clear coat or leave as is? I appreciate some work will be required to maintain without...

I asked the same question a few weeks ago when I started doing my IROC wheels. Most everyone says do not clear coat because it wil stat to yellow after a period of time. Just polish them every few months.

I wonder if it would even stick well to the smooth surface? Probably better to just to polish them regularly. Would be good idea though if it didnt take away to much shine. And you could get a hard coating like the OEM did.

Clear coat may detract from your hard-earned luster.
You can keep it pretty nice by waxing them regularly, and keeping them as clean as possible. Letting brake dust build up then get wet causes an acidic buildup (according to Fikse, a maker of high-end competition wheels). They recommend cleaning regularly with a 50/50 mix of Simple Green (a non-caustic degreaser, unlike the purple varieties which etch aluminum) and water and a camelhair paintbrush [sable?]. If you've been keeping it waxed everything should just fall off the rim. The wax will also prevent oxidation and other aging effects.
Look here for their complete Wheel Care Tip Sheet.
