so what no one has ever done their own body work, or sanded their paint, or what, this sucks.
i just wanted to know the grits i needed.

Ok this is how i did it...i personally did it this way, i had 2 coats of clear on and i did burn through in one small spot but it did not matter b/c this was a fender that i was experimenting with(first time ever painting and buffing and ****).
Wetsand using a softblock with 1200 grit to get rid of the majority of defects, then go to 2000 grit. After you wet sand it down then buff the car out using a buffing machine and I did it like this
3M HeavyCut Compound
3M MediumCut Compund
Machine Glaze
Hand Glaze
It came out like a ****ing mirror, it was as smooth as glass when you touched it.....I am am painting my car now and I plan on laying extra coats of clear so i can sand out all the defects and then buff.

at my work (body shop) i do 1500 with the D/A sander (dry). they i use the D/A with 2000 (wet). after that i buff it with medium cut compound, followed by machine glaze, then topped off with hand glaze. the results are amazing.
from skratch?
Well, suppose you are lucky enough to own an 86 out of Van Nuys, almost everytrhing is still original stock. My baby needs lots of TLC. What do I do with a car that has a thick black primer, done by an inexperienced teen age car abuser? I mean it looks bad, it's chipping, fading in spots, over primed in other areas, and what this kid did to the door, oh. Where do I start???

Hand sand the entire car with 80 grit. I began sanding my car with 80 grit only to realize there was 2 different paint jobs on it before. So I took it down to the original primer, it took some time but it was well worth it.

By the way, 82firebird, any progress pics? I've been keeping up with your paint project since I'm doing the paint/bodywork on my 83.

you need to get sand paper and body filler. its also good to have a grinder, D/A sander, buffer, stuff like that. as for the polish, i you all 3M stuff:
perfect it III compound (use a stiff white foam pad for this)
perfect it III machine glaze (use a black foam pad from this)
hand glase
i will grab some pics of my supplies tomorrow for you.
also if this is you first time, then i would put a minimum of 3 coats of clear over the paint. just to be safe
