Crumbling paint?

I'll be getting a paint job soon... but I have a question.

Do you guys recommend taking off the side molding to get it painted underneath, then paint the molding? If so, can you re-attach the molding with some kind of adhesive?

Also, if they just paint over the molding... would the paint dry in between the door and the molding (right on top of the molding for example), so if I push on the paint there, in the crack, would it cruble? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

What did you guys/girls do when you painted your car?

Thanks!

the paint won't make a bridge from the molding to the door... will it show that you didn't take it off? no, but it'll be a PITA for further work on the door... My suggestion is to take it off so you can paint both separetly... and yes alot of companies sell adhesif for that kind of molding... I always use 3M though... but that is just a personal habbit

That depends on the thickness of the new primer/paint/clearcoat. There's a good chance that it will be obvious that you didn't take the moldings off.

I read in a post a while back about taking dental floss and "sawing" the adhesive to get the moldings off. From there you just use adhesive remover on the door and the trim and once the car is painted, use 3M adhesive to stick them back on.

But once you take them off, you won't want to put them back on because it will look so much better without them.
