i need help choosing wheel sizes

i have a stock 82 trans am and i was looking for new wheels that would fill the fender well and something that would come out even with the side of the car, or maybe an inch less nothing more than that though. i dont want them to stick past the fenders because that looks silly. right now i have 17x7 AR torq thrust IIs with 245/45/ZR17 all around. and after lowering my car, im not happy with the way they look anymore.

so what size can i use to accomplish my goal?? i dont plan on replacing the rear end, and i could easily get spacers/adaptors. ive seen that guy with the Z06 wheels 17x9.5 all around, will that fit on any thirdgen, or just later ones?? but for RWD wheels, would a 17x8 do it, without rubbing in the front?? please help me, thank you.

I've got 17x8.5s on mine wrapped in 245/45/17 tires. They work out really well for me. The rears in this pic have the small spacer still installed but I've since removed it and now the front and rear both stick out about the same. The backspacing on these wheels in the same front and back, both the backspacing numbers for the rear which componsated for the slightly larger wheels up front.

those wheels look nice, and they fill the well sweetly. im curious tho, i have an 82, from what ive noticed while trying to purchase exhaust or suspension products, alot of stuff wont fit an 82 but will fit 83-92, do you know if this is the same for wheels?? mainly the rear axle (i would assume they are all the same) and offset are my concerns, i already jacked it up once, i want to get this try perfect. are those wheels FWD or RWD?? do you think that exact wheel tire combo would fit on my car?? thanks for your help

Any wheel that would fit a thirdgen f-body will fit your 82. I know there is alot of stuff different between the years, but not wheel fitments. There are people that have 11" wide wheels on the back with no problems, and there are also tons of people on here with 9.5" wide wheels on here no problem. Try doing a search on wheels or a specific style wheel and see what you find, there are alot of people who post pics of their wheels, I know cause I searched all the time before I bought mine.

Oh yea, you can also use this website to figure out what you need to adapt new model f-body/corvette wheels to your car.
