My subtle 12 hour long taillight mod - I would never do this again!

It took me straight hours to do this little mod. I think it was worth it to get rid of that amber section and to also change the location of the brake lights and turn signals.

Before

During

After

It only took 5 hours to paint and remount the taillight socket locations, but it took 7 hours of test fitting to make sure they fit properly and light up right.

First I moved the turn signal from the bottom to the ends and move the brake lights over one socket so that the brake lights light up in the middle instead of at the ends.

The turn signals were so long that when mounted straight, the taillights would not fit back in the rear so I had to mount the tail light brackets at an angle to make them fit.

I wanted to keep that factory style lock positions so using a soldering iron improperly, I melted out the old sockets and moved them to thier new locations and then remolded them with the iron again to make the new mounting locations just as strong as the original housing.

Man, seemed to take me forever, but I think it looks much better than before, especially the lights in the new locations.

That seem like a lot of work for such a change, but hey it does look good.

One of the reasons it took so long was because I had no idea how I was going to do it. I did everything on a trial and error basis. If I had to do it all over again, I know exactly what to do now.

I'll try to get some night pics. I have short little vid of the lights from my garage, but I am not sure how to upload it.

Looks good. Makes the stock lights look better.
I just pulled the lights off of my 86 Trans Am and stuck them on my Formula.

Very nice! Can't wait to see them lit up!

I found out the hard way too...the taillight mods take time to do right. Thanks goodness I did not have to do any relocating of sockets for mine. I just added more sockets. So it meant I only had to dremel new holes.
