truly a nice set up.....i have 2 questions for ya:
1- do you have any overheating issues?(i know most cooling air comes from air deflector underneath)
2- do you plan on putting some mesh in front of the openings or maybe spray paint the ducts black or maybe both? really though nice set up i might have to copy that possibly if ya dont mind

I would suggest some gutter guard and paint it black....

 

You can buy those for $45.00 each on Ebay, there's a guy in Arizona selling them. Or you can pay $120 I think and get them from thirdgen resources.

The car still runs 170*-180* with the boxes in and thats ragging on the car in 90* weather. However, a long time ago, I wired my two fans in parallel which are controlled by the Jet cool fan switch. I also have a 180 thermostat.

I had the boxes made at a local metal fabricating shop. They were designed on the computer and then the machines laser cut the patterns out of a sheet of galvanized sheet metal. Then one of the techs welded them together and siliconed the joints.

I'm not going to paint them black. Black retains heat and the galvanized sheet metal actual stays pretty cool! I dont want to coat them with any paint and lose the cooling properties of that metal. The boxes are really light. They only weigh maybe a pound a piece.

You really start to feel the difference from 55 on upto as fast as it will go. Plus not only is it getting "Rammed air", the motor is also getting cooler air then the stock setup pulls.

I am looking for something cool to use for grill screens. I was thinking about using the same screen material that Z06's use, if I can find it!

Any suggestions on screen material?

The fact that it's pulling cooler air from the outside, rather than warmed "engine" air (air that the radiator etc... has warmed up) should be proof enough.

Just think of the same principal of a cold air kit. What does that do? It pulls cooler air from outside of the motor compartment.

If you want to go one further, send me an air temp gauge and I'll be glad to hook it upto my lid. Then I'll record temps with the stock setup and the ram air both at idle and both while driving.

Or, you could just take my word for it. Your call!

Ram Air is positive manifold pressure. Pulling a coller charge of air into your manifold is Cold Air Induction. Lot of people claim CAI as RAM AIR.

I like your setup though. But I always felt z-28 grilles look empty without fog lights.

 

This setup can be considered both CAI and Ram-air. It effectively does both! It's drawing cooler air from outside the engine bay and it's ramming it in the intake the faster you accelerate. It definitely pulls harder in the upper RPM's and in the higher speeds. It's a great mod!

 

Does anyone have any ideas on some grill screens? What material would you recommend?

 

Ram Air has been proven time and time again, to be mere myth on cars. The mere effect of ram air woul necesitate you going 300+mph, then having a scoop that would in effect trade off dynamic engery for static energy, (ie moving to compressed) then it would need a straight shot into the motor, any bends in the tract will decrease the pressure.

Thiers not a single intake on the market that can give you Ram air, thier all cai's.

And the reason it pulls harder at upper rpm, is the need for more air is now fullfilled, not because its getting extra air rammed in ala forced induction.

Dont get me wrong, its a great cai, i have the same setup (well close..... ) on my 90, but in no way is it ever ramming air into the cylinders, hell ponitac admits they only used it as a gimmick word for thier cai back in the day........

Either way, nice setup!

That is extremely bad a$$. I wish I could do the same thing on my bird but haven't quite figured out a good way yet. Rock on man, great setup!

I was thinking about using Z06 screen for the grill screen inserts(the same stuff that's used in the Z06 vents).

I figured you guys would know of some stuff that would look nice for the grill screens (besides a billet grill). I just want to screen each opening so that it doesn't suck in a plastic bag, or a bird, or mustangs, whatever.......

My factory fog lights are trashed, so I didn't reuse them. Also, a fog light wouldn't stop all that much from being sucked in and block air filters.

Hence, the need for grill screens...........

Hi, I wouldn't mind doing that cept for one thing, what happens if you drive around in the rain? Since I have a MAF would water get up there?

Most non paper filters will work just fine.

 

I dont drive may car in the rain. Hell, I barely get a chance to drive it on sunny weekends! However, back before the new motor and new paint job, when I first put the ram-air boxes in, I did drive it once in the rain. The bottom of the boxes were damp, but the water cant sit there the way it's angled, so it drains well. The air filters were dry, but the bottoms of the boxes will get damp! Hope that helps!

I know exactly what you can use for your screens on your Ram Air Boxes. Use "Expanded Aluminum" I have a black 91 Z28 exactly like yours....with some mods of coarse. I bought my boxes off of ebay....and I noticed a pretty big difference....along with all of my other mods. I noticed a more crisp throttle response....specially on crisp cold nights. I've only floored my car once from a dead stop on a cold night....and it hit all 3 gears...and kept going...so I let off. My transmission has been built though.....before I bought it so that's probably why....anyhow....you can get expanded aluminum at "Low's" or "Home Depot" I also painted my ram air boxes....looks really good

Sorry man, I don't have any pictures of the installation or anything...Here is a picture of the front nose....I still have my foglights mounted though. You see the grill on my SS hood? That's what expanded aluminum is.....you could paint it...or keep the aluminum finish....

 

closer pic of the grill....in this picture..I was just test fitting the grill....it looked a little messed up....I've recently re-done it...and it looks 10 times better....but that is what expanded aluminum looks like...and I think that would be your best bet. Good Luck Dude

On my SS hood? It came with a black grill...and I just installed the expanded aluminum over it.

 

Ok, I plan on using the expanded aluminum for the grills. So, what would you guys recommend to use for the guards arround the grills (like custom84 has arround the grill in his hood).????

and he spray paints them black for you!

I had it on the car when I had the stock motor and it made a nice improvement.

Now with the new motor, it made a really nice improvement on the butt dyno! It pulls even harder from ~ 55mph or so all the way upto you get scared and slow it down!

I would recommend this mod to anyone, provided they can keep the water temp as cool as mine runs.

 

I agree.....seems like my car wants to go a lil faster...and a lil faster....I recommend them...I was quoted from 5-10 extra horse....not to sure though

They would probably sell for $50 - $70 or so. The ABS plastic isn't all that cheap. It's some durable stuff!! And it weighs nothing! The plastic welder isn't cheap either. I'm not out to rape people. The price would be my cost plus $10 or so for my time. Once I have a figure, I'll let you guys know.

Looks great...Those are so easy to make. I worked as a sheetmetal mech for 6 yrs. I could make those buy hand in 20 minutues. I just dont have the shop tools to make it quick and easy now.

You can get the expanded screen from the shop that made those for you.

 

I ended up finding the screen that I'm going to use at Lowe's. But, thanks!

I think the ABS plastic boxes will be better than the metal. My car will be the "test lab rat" first though!
