Just got a '86 Firebird

I just picked up a '86 Firebird at the Police Impound Auction for $130. The body is in pretty good shape aside from one headlight and the hood. Interior needs some work(complete redo) and I don't know if it runs or not since it doens't have a battery yet. All in all I am still happy with the purchase.

Isn't it only 1987's that had the 3rd brake light mounted on the hatch glass and not the spoiler...?

Sweet deal, If all else fails you could part it out and make more than you spent.

Thats what I was thinking. There were 2 more there. One newer one with a 305 HO but it looked like it blew the head gasket and the body was trash as was the interrior, so I passed that one up, another one that had a huge dent in the door and had a sunroof 2.8L auto, ugly color too, so I didnt go for that one either...but for $100 it ended up running for the guy, although it was missing pretty bad... last time I was there there was a '92 Firebird that went for $300, don't know if it ran or not but it was a V6 car. They have an auction every too weeks so I will probably go back and see what I can find.

The auctions are posted in the local city paper. It is a pretty small ad and most people don't notice it I am guessing. In the auctions section of the paper. Usually there is around 50 people or less there. $70 is the minimum any car goes for, those that look like they will run right off the bat go for more. Anything that looks like it wont run will go for arund $100(for crappy cars) to around $150 for ones that are popular.

man atleast ya know where the auctions are! Where i live you have to call a number in the newspaper, pay a 10 dollar a month fee and they will tell u of every car auction in the state. I just want to find one near me but no luck yet. Where would i go to find a police auction?

Police station maybe?

Hmmm. I am wondering, there seems to be a lot of thirdgen's at these auctions, I guess it really says something about them huh?

They are at the Police Impound lots, or at least that is where mine are at. Every other Thursday they have one. There is usually at least one 3rd gen there, this was the first time I saw three though. Call up the impound lot or the police station(non-emergency number) and ask them.

No, it was 86. In 1985, the third brake rule went into effect, and since 86 cars came out in 85, they had to slap a brake light on somewhere since the cars were already in production and it was too late to redesign the third brake light any where else until 1987.
