Shining up old wheels...need help

Fellow third gen'ers....

My Forumla has a pair of aftermarket chrome rims somewhat similar to the GTA style (that is, it has a crome lip around a paited center...actually kinda cool). Anyways, the chrome has started to develop rust pits all along itself, and the other chrome just looks really dull. I tried some chrome polish before but with little effectiveness. What can i do to shine these up nice? If i steel whool/brush the chrome, do i run the risk of permenatly removing the chroming? How thick is it? Thanks for any possible help!

 And i saw Metallica last night...freaking awesome

First see what some chrome polish will do with a little bit of elbow grease. If it shines up slowly, then move up to a orbital buffer or high speed buffer. But make sure the chrome plating is not cracking, which might lead to flaking, and thus creating a huge disaster.
