I want to remove the hatch lid so I can sand it down, put some por 15 on and primer it. The problem is. I really cant tell if you can remove the glass fromt he metal part. it looks like there are just a few bolts (circled in yellow)
-Can I take this piece off?
-Has anyone done it, is it easy?
-Am I risking seriously alignment issues when I put it back on?

I'd like to know also, the whole non glass area of mine is rusted out and needs replaced. It's held together with paint right now

Glass is bolted and glued to the decklid.
Maybe they make a neutralizer for the glue, but the glass almost seems like it will break when trying to pry the deck lid off.
When I broke my hatch, I was going to use my decklid on a hatch that had good glass but a dented deck lid. My friend that does body work just smoothed out the bent deck lid for me since we couldn't get it apart.

That decklid is a PITA to get off
Once you do get the glue off as Zepher mentioned, you have to put it back on with NEW glue and then do all sorts of stuff....
Not to mention the GREAT risk of breaking the glass..

Screw it then... I will just work with it attached to the glass.
I figure sanding upside down was gonna be a major PITA, but that sounds easy compared to the other stuff.
Well thanks for the input guys.

So, is it possible to buy new hatch lids? Or should I just try to find a whole new hatch? I'm thinking complete hatches are going to be pretty expensive, theres a lot of glass there

Generally, they sell for $50 to $300 depending on the spoiler that is on it.
Well I decided to just take the whole hatch off.
It looks easy enough, just 4 13mm bolts or something.
(for newbie searches, since i couldnt find anything)
hatch removal
hatch break

They fit, and they're the same.
spoilers, defrosters, brake light, etc are the only differences.

Two people can remove it and replace it but I had 2 other people with me when I did the first one. When I swapped hatches with a friend of mine, the two of us did it ourselves.
We removed the bolts from the hinges and lifted the hatch off and set it on the ground, right side up and then put the other hatch on. The hatch isn't that heavy, about 75lbs.
