my paint looks decent except for the roof and i'd like to get it painted. if i had enough money i'd do the entire car, but for now i'd really like to take care of just that part. can this be done and still make the "new" paint blend in with the "old" paint or will i have visible marks? i've called 2 different places so far and they both said they didn't do just part of the car. i've attached a pic of the roof:

i sprayed a bit of rustoleum on there to get rid of even more white that was on the roof before. but there's still some left.

might as well try and cover it, no sense in getting it painted now, then re-painting it when you do the rest of the car.....

Plus it is a PITA to get new paint to match old paint......

I would agree get the whole thing painted and at most rattle can the roof to keep rust down if the paint and primer is gone in any spot. At very least paint the 1/4 panels and the roof. Read is very hard if not impossible to blend and buff and get it to match. I would do a macco job before trying to blend the paint, it will not be show but for what it is it looks good. 300 bucks, thats what the paint would cost you to paint it yourself.

One thing you might do paint the roof and put a pin stripe to transition the change, it wouldn't look that bad, but then again it wouldn't look great either.

No body shop is not going to do it though, there wouldn't be any profet in it, and they would charge about 200 bucks probably to do it.

Ever thought about a 2-tone? If the paint down low is nice, then offset the red with a black roof and sail panels. If my spoiler, rear bumper and qtrs weren't faded, that's what I would do to my car.

I don't know the black top would really only look right with a T-Top car and dark tint. But either way it would give a 4th gen look to it.

ok im finally gettin ready to paint it today. been dealing with other problems so i've put it off for a while. my question is should i do what i did before and just spray over it or is there anything i should do before the paint goes on?? what pattern should i use? and should i put anything on the paint once i'm done so it wont fade as quick? i dunno a thing when it comes to painting a car. i'll try to scrape most of that dead paint off, then wash it.

Lol, the roof of my car is practically silver from being faded in the hot sun over 15 years. Maybe thats a sign that I just paint my entire car silver.

I use spray paints all the time, I never heard of getting lines. I agree with you man, spray painting the top does look better than when it was faded, lol it can't look any worse.

I think I would have sanded off all of the oxidized paint, If I had to paint it with a spray can like you did, do it then wet sand it and lightly buff it.

i've already applied 2 coats of CC. can i wet sand it afterward still?? it seems like it was shining more before i applied the CC. i dont mind the lines so much i'd just like to get the paint as glossy as possible.

I'm no paint expert but, wetsanding should take out the lines or ripples in the clear and make the surface look flat and smooth. It will also dull, but after you buff it it will shine. Probably want to use a larger sanding block to make sure you dont make any low spots. Good luck.

well im gonna have to try and wet sand it. now that the CC is dry it's almost completely made the paint lose its reflection. its almost dull. if that dont work i'll just remove every spot of paint from the roof and start again from the bare metal.

i hate doing **** twice

btw what grade sandpaper should i use?
