Painting coolant tanks idea
I am sick of the ugly coolant and washer tank and figured i'd paint em to match the car, either silver or black possibly orange. MY buddy has this done on his 383'd cutlass but i still want to be able to see the levels. I was thinking of masking off a strip down the side and then spraying the rest like a "window" to see the levels. The tanks are 18 years old so they look real bad is this really gonna look funny with one spot undone. I was actually just thinking of doing them chameleon "ice" its a silverish and i believe green/blue changing that i thought might add a little to the nasty looking underhood. Opinions yes no to the "window" or yes no to the chamealeon

I dunno about using a chameleon... but i think the idea of just plain black with a strip of tape or something down the side... take the tape off once it's painted so u can view the level still... sounds good.

copy and paste link --it's not working just click on my webpage and scroll down for pic.
i removed mine and replaced then with one form a 91 Ford exploder and i think it looks real good i don't like all the clutter under the hood, i removed the a/c, smog equip(including charcoal canister) and where the canister was is where i put the washer fluid/coolant bottle.

We sell the Chameleon ICE and it's just a real nice Charcoal really. It does look sharp but you may as well go with Charcoal; it will be much cheaper. I would reccomend using Graphite Wheel Paint by DupliColor - it is GREAT stuff. It'd be cool to sand down all the imperfections and make it look super clean, not a bad idea if done well. Post if ya do it!

I've always felt that painted tanks look cheap, like you were too lazy to remove them when you used a rattle can on the engine bay.
For $20 you can buy both brand new.

I went ahead with the chameleon ice. I was expecting more of a silver than graphite but it looks good. So far i did the strut tower tips, washer bottle and the front piece above the radiator. Not sure if it will picture good. But i'll take some tommorrow. My engine cleanup has commenced i got the valve covers cleaned up and did some gunking just making it pretty before i sell it. thinking of doing the plenum chameleon but not sure. On the washer tank i ran a strip of like 1/2 or 1/4 inch tape up the side and its actually easy to see the level. Tommorrow i hope to tackle the plenum and coolant tank. The washer one almost looks aftermarket real nice look. Thanks for the input i'll get some pics soon when i'm entirely done.

UMMMMM if youre planning on selling it i wouldnt start painting everything you can under the hood. You may think its cool but personally if i was buying the car i would think 2 things....what is he hiding....two this ****ing sucks i hate that why the hell would this guy paint all sorts of crap under the hood, im not buying this. See personally i dont like the idea of what youre doing (i dont think at least, pics may change my mind but who knows) so if i was looking for a maro and looked at your car i wouldnt buy it. Remember for resale value what YOU think is cool a potential buyer might not. My friend just bought an 89 2.8 maro and the previous owner had painted a bunch of plastic interior pieces with this ugly teel paint....im sure he thought it was cool....we thought it sucked and had to go about fixing the damage the guy had done.

You could add a level tubing to the side....
then you could paint the whole thing...
couple of fittings and a bit of clear tubing...
I've done similar (replaced) for a hydraulic oil tank.

Everything is done under the hood now. Will take some pics tommorrow it was already dark when i got it back together. Ok so heres the low down the tanks and upper piece above the radiator and the tops of the strut towers are chameleon "ice". I decided i wanted to do the cai pipe but thought it would look crowded the same colro so i did the pipe and the vapor canister in chameleon "gold/magenta" I wanted to do the plenum in chameleon but thought that was going to far. Me and my dad really looked at it this mornign he thought i should pull it off and do it chameleon. I decided to pull it off and it didnt want to leave i was afraid of breaking off the bolts and having to re drill tap etc because i have a show fri. night. So i took my airbrush and did the plenum and the top of the throttle body "aluminum". I love how it all looks i'm not just randomly painting parts i want it to look good and all look right so thats all i'm doing. I cleaned the valve covers real good yesterday and it looks real nice now i can lift the hood at shows and it looks good. AS far as my taste whatever i love it and so far everyone else has including my dad. He builds show cars as a side thing ranging from our 34 ford, 81Z28 to our elcamino with 45K original miles and he's more into the factory coloring under the hood. I knew it looked good when he said it looked good and he's hard to please. I'm washing her tommorrow so i'll get some pics up hopefully tommorrow afternoon not sure how the chameleon will photograph but we'll see.

I took mine out when I did my motor swap. I painted them Chevy Orange to match the engine block. I think it looks good!I didnt really care about the level. If I wanna know, I just pop the top and look in!

I agree with Jim, just buy some new ones and save the time. It'll look cheap painted.
