Unpainted cross lace rims

Has anybody stripped their crosslace rims of clear coat and gold (or dark gray) paint and left them silver? If so, could you post pictures?

My clear-coat is shot and my gold paint is stained. If I decide to put the gold back, is there an accurate match (and durable) rattle can - or do I need to have the body shop do it?

Any input appreciated

Kevin

Mmm...don't like them stripped. I think I'll repaint them. What did you use to paint them?

I imagine some engine paint would work, but I don't think I'll find a matching gold color. Any ideas?

I used spray on paint remover. It took about 3 applications per wheel to get all the paint off.
Just spray it on, let it sit, rinse it off and do it again as needed.
If you use a brush to clean the wheel with the stripper still on the wheel, make sure it doesn't splatter on your skin ir in your eyes as it will burn.

Make sure you are in a ventilated area as well, the fumes are quite strong. I did mine outside on the grass.

I agree that the wheels do not look good stripped, definately paint them gold or black.

I did the same as Zepher. I bought a set of wheels that looked like crap and stripped/painted them. I use the paint stripper in a can from Advance auto, then polished the outer lip. Then 3 or 4 coats of paint. I used brake caliper paint. It seems to hold up better especially on the fronts where heat sometimes builds up.

I'm going to do them in gold (as they were originally). I'm worried about getting a bad gold color though, and having them look cheesy. That Eastwood kit is probably the best bet (though expensive).

I don't hate the unpainted silver, but I like the gold/flame red combo better. It's so 80's - and I feel that I have a duty to promote "80s-ness" wherever I can.

another thing you can do when stripping them to help:

get some good gloves first... you DONT want to touch this stuff

use spray on paint stripper like Zepher said, then get the loose coil scrubby pads made for doing dishes... the all metal flat coil ones... not your usual steel wool... its like a springy metal scrubber...

spray it on and leave it for 10 mins or so... then scrub at the wheels WITH YOUR GLOVES ON... keep a hose handy... if you get some on your skin wash it away ASAP... it'll take a second before you feel it starting to burn... so to it as soon as it happens, dont go, "oh, it doesnt hurt and keep going.." lol

anyhoo, scrubbing it like that means less paint stripper used, and it does a great job.... done carefully, it doesnt scratch machined surfaces either...

btw, dont get this stuff on any tires you plan on driving on.

What happens to the tires? I stripped those GTA wheels as well as the Formula wheels that are currently on my Formula. And I drove on those tires as well. Should I be looking for something on the tires?

it weakens the rubber somehow... im guessing stripping out the oils or somthing..

i dont know exactly what, but i do know i left some on a tire overnight and it ate into it some.....

getting curious, i sprayed another junk tire.. let it sit for a hour, nothing seemed to happen so i washed it off clean and it sat for a year...

tire still looked fine, and i put it on a car to push it around the garage... as i was pumping it up with air, the same spot buldged a lil..... you could kinda see the spray pattern from when i sprayed it off... it was kinda, like a localized dry rot on JUST thoes spots..

knowing how it eats plastic and burns my hands, i just dont think its safe to have on any tires... i mean, i only had that stuff on it for about a hour and it did perm damage to the tire..

edit: whoops i said wheel instead of tire...

Well, I didn't spray it directly on the tire, but it did get some on it. I also didn't let it sit longer than 10 minutes either before spraying it off. I think I am safe, tires still look like they did before I stripped the wheels.

yea.. you probly are..

i think a key part to what i did was, i let it sit on there a hour... by that time, its pretty much evaporated and is harder and such...

10mins probly wont hurt it, but tires are one thing id rather be safe then sorry about.

If your rims are currently gold, then you will NOT be able to strip the gold off all the way. The gold color seems to be anodized of some sorts, and will barely come off. If you do some searching around here, youll find the correct paint code for that color gold... I dont remember it off the top of my head. Then you can go to your local paint supply store and get that exact color, and youll be done!

Crappy.
I just got a line on some gold ones, but I'd planned on stripping them.

If I can't then I guess thats out of the equation.

wonder if the paint stripper stuff messes up the polished part?
