Ok heres the question: I have something on my car, lets say like a big blower sticking out my hood and its legal in illinois but might not be in your state what would the cops in your state do. Illinois cops have to leave out of state cars alone on laws like that, like drivers window tint its illegal on a illinois registered car but they cant hassle outa state cars for it.

 

i live in canada so i don't know what they'd do to you, but if i had a blower i'd have my car impounded

 

The police don't take to kindly to blowers here in New York. I was at a car show (actually it was just a gathering of guys that are apparently friends but there were about 30 cars) in October and there was a Chevelle SS with a huge *** blower and no hood. The cops decided to pull into the parking lot and watch everyone leave. You don't want to get caught on the street with blowers and stuff around here.

 

As long as you were driving properly you'd probably be OK.

But stuff such as window tint & mufflers, even if OK in your state are consider as vehicle equipment & you might get stuck.

 

exhaust, frame, signals, and lights are all you need to be legal here

 

I think that a few states have laws on "visiblity." Which is why many states don't allow objects hanging from your rear view mirror (not usually strictly enforced). I imagine they would see an 8-71 as a limitation on ones visibility

 

PA is the worst state when it comes to laws like that heck I cant even put a cowl on my car that comes up past the line of the cowl more than 2 inches.

 

dont matter in nj, the cops might pull you over to check it out. other than that i see them mostly messing with **** or people who are acting like jackasses. you can get away with alot of things that you shouldnt have (tint neons and other stuff) if a) it doesnt look real dumb, and b) your not being an ***. if you have a blown 72 chevelle and are hotrodding all over, they will bust you, but if your acting like you should, there are no problems most of the time.

 

Even though most of that stuff is illegal here in Wisconsin, the cops tend to leave you alone.

Their main concern these days is drunk drivers.

Currently live in VA - I think they are pretty strict here too. I have seen a lot of dark tint around though. If you pay attention, there are no beaters - I mean none - I figure their inspection stuff is really tough, but I haven't lived here long.

I'm a Michigan native and what posbird87 said is pretty close to the truth - I think Michigan's heritage and Detroit in particular as the motor capital of the world helps keep the automobile laws pretty liberal. Did away with emmisions testing at least 10 yrs ago and no inspection crapola to deal with either. I'm not used to these weird car laws in VA - think I'm actually going to have my truck (daily driver) switched to my fathers name in MI just to avoid all the hassle with the VA rules.

As long as you arent driving like moron the cops will leave you alone. There are tinting laws but i've only seen state cops enforce it and they only got the guy when he got pulled over for something else. Detroit cops really could care less about any traffic law. They got bigger things to deal with. I was on the freeway many times doin 75-80 in the 55 zone and I had Detroit cops pass me up cause i was goin to slow. Plus with detroit you got everyone in ghetto cruisers so obviuosly everyione got tint. Bout the only thing you might get pulled over for is if the cops wanted to see what is under your hood. Noise restricitons arent really enforced unless you do a burn out or have an extremely loud stereo. The stereo is rarely enforced though. Never heard of anyone get pulled over for visibilty issues.

Basically in michigian, if you dont drive like a jackass you'll be fine.

Really? I wonder if thats all around or just in your part of the state. Cause I've been pulled over multiple times and they never said anything about the 3 inches of cowl on my hood....

 

Here in FL you can have window tint, and a loud exhaust since emmisions/inspections dont exist anymore. There's certain areas where you may get noise violations such as the upper class beach neighborhoods but its really rare. They are however real strict on how you drive in my area since its so crowded here I guess. There's so many cops here, the minute you go over the limit you can count on seeing flashing lights in the rearview.

I had a friend with a blower on his GTA and he's never had a problem with the cops. They don't bother you until you ask for it....

 

in cali i have my aero hood and my friend has a 5 in cowl course these are all pre 74 but we both run strait pipes to turn downs no cops have busted me yet knock on wood but in teh camaro they busted me for tint tinted headlights and tails

 

In NC I have a buddy here with an old ford truck with a blower thats a couple inches taller than the damn chopped roof and he has 3 stages of nitrous! They dont care as long as your not hauling *** and driving it like you stole it!

 

Well in my community you would get fined left and right for leaving a car outside your house with no hood on it.............quality of living violation.....

But I have seen many crazy cars, a blower wouldn't cause you any harm, unless of course you were hotrodding all around town......

Now if you were 16 years old and had a car with a blower sticking out of the hood, you would get messed with pretty much anywhere........

Maybe where you live but here in Philly as long as your not driving like your on a track they'll leave you alone. There is a law because of visablity issues but its not inforced really.

The only way to really know to call the state. They will tell you if its legal or not. A local police department will tell you if its enforced or not. Make sure of things before you start a project.

 

I agree that you should know whether or not what your building can be driven where you live before you do it, but the point of my question is being able to go other places. My car has had a blower on it since 86 so I am pretty sure its ok in Illinois. I have been to Iowa and Michigan also but I am planning on doing the power tour from St Louis to Green Bay and thought instead of just asking about Wisconsin I would find out about as many states as I could (never know where a afternoon drive might take you) Also if you think you could call the police and ask them a question like this and get a straight answer, hope you never want to go anywhere

no....they dont say much about vehicles with blowers,they probably dont want to be embarassed if they went to pull a blower car over and it took off and kicked his a$$

the only laws i think about in colorado are basic traffic violations. Right now my car is too loud and i dont use a front liscence plate, no troubles yet.

 

My dad is taking his 71 Formula to Green Bay in the Power Tour. I'll find out info about blowers. My friend was going 50 in a 25 without a hood, and he got pulled over. The cop could have given him a ticket for no hood, but just let him off with the speeding ticket.

My x neighbor is a local cop, and I could get lots of info from him. He was a fun guy, I raced him in Grand Turismo 3 all night once. Plus he's always pulling wheelies on his triumph bike. He was fun.

 

I hope they put a thirdgen in GT4! Or atleast a T/A! Here in Houston, they haven't pulled me over for my blackout yet, but the State Troopers don't like it when you go 90 in a 70 tho.
