I just got my 383 stroker rebuilt at the local speedshop and they didn't paint it, but they hot tanked everything and primed it. Then when I picked it up, I just went and got the spray cans of engine enamel (tested up to 1200 degrees) and did 3 coats of chevy orange and 2 coats of clear and looks hot! As far as taking the engine out, mine was already out, but I'm sure it would be hard and the paint job wouldn't be as good doing it with the engine in.

Its not too bad doing and enigne in the car... i did it.
The valvecovers I took off to paint (stock stamped) and wrapped the pulleys with newspaper so I could do the waterpump, balancer and front of the block/heads.
The only hard part really is under and around the exaust manifolds.
(I used a spray can for this too)
