If they were wider I'd be tempted. I'm not interested in another 8 incher. Don't take that the wrong way

Whats the widest tire that'd fit on that wheel and still fit on a 3rdGen?

Are you talking about the ZR1 style rims? www.slponline.com has the ZR1's available for 3rd gens;

They're in silver and "hyper-black" for $699.00 a set (four 17x8").

"An SLP exclusive, these 17 x 8" ZR-1-style wheels were specifically designed to fit 1982-1992 F-Bodies without spacers or other modifications. They're available in classic silver or Hyper Black and come complete with matching SLP center caps."

Those DO look nice. I wasnt planning on rims at all, ever, more than likely, but now that I see those, for 700 bucks and no worrying about back-spacing and all, man.....I'm tempted.

ok looks like i cant find em on slp's site,,maybe they are too new.
Heres the info i see in there add....
if you guys wanna see em yourself they are on page 114 of the April 2004 issue of Chevy HighPerformance Mag.
The add says:

" NEW! 3rd-gen ZR-1 style (also used on the SS) 17"x8" silver or black wheels w/ caps incl. $699 /set. Fits 82-92 fbodys without spacers!"

they are no more expencive then the ones for the 4th gens but these are like you said 1" thiner then the others for 4th gens......wish theyd come in chrome tho!!

I also wanna see pics, the lip looks a little different then the orig zr1 wheels. but not to far off IMO and i like the look of these better then the ROH wheels IMO also.

8" for the front is perfect but the rear would be nice in at least a 9". you could always do a 4thgen rear swap so then you wouldn't need spacer and get the proper offset for the front. however if they made the 9" in the right offset that would make for a nice lip like the firehawk wheel.

$700 for zr1 style wheels that fit a thirdgen without adapters? This sounds like a great chance for us guys with 15x7 wheels to upgrade without paying to much for wheels or adapters.

I wrote a letter to SLP concerning the width, if they would offer a 9" wide version it would sell a hellova lot better than the 8" version.

if they offered an 8" version I think I'd probably slap a set on the ol card right now.

even an 8.5 would be good. why they think 8's are fine for the rear is beyond me.

nice i like them..but i do agree on the width. i wonder how they make them if the are cast of machined anyone know? because if they are machined a 9.5 would be easier than a new casting. Then just maybe we could use the persuation of buying power to get a larger size made? just a though i did hear group purchase in the thread somewhere. if they could go wider i would be in for sure. so what ya think 9.5 rears with a 8 frt?

Jeff

an 8-8.5 is really the max for the front assuming you have the right offset. anywhere from a 9-10 will fit nicely without modifying with the right offset. 10.5 and up really should be modified to fit right.

this is of cours all numbers assuming you want to keep the tires in the stock location but have a wider pattern. you can of course fit wider wheels but then they will stick out.

9.5 I think is good. You can fit a large tire on there and not worry about rubbing or anything. Man, I think this is the first time in a long time SLP made something for the third gen? Other then bring back the hawks. I guess a lot of people wanted the hawk rims, and they needed to replace it with something else? Id still like to see an 17x11 like the 4th gen ones. That would be awesome. 315's anyone? :hail:

4thgen rims with no spacers, I do like the sound of that. I can not stand even the idea of using a spacer more than 1/8" thick. If they made 4thgen rims with a deep dish and no spacers for thirdgens, Id go excstatic.

I talked to SLP also and the backspacing is 5.5". I think 4.25" - 4.5" would've been a lot better.

I emailed them and this is the response I got.....

I just found out about your new 3rd Gen F-body
> specific ZR1 wheels. I've been waiting for that
> product for a long time only to be disapointed by
> the fact that they are only 8'' wide.
> I hope you will have some in 9.5'' and 11'' soon
> because I will be the first one to buy a set.
> PAT

As always, we appreciate and value customer feedback. If the demand warrants it and we find it to be economically feasible, we will offer additional sized versions of the 3rd-gen wheel.

i just emailed them saying i'm not at all interested in an 8" wide wheel, but if they started making 9.5" and 11" ones i'd be one of the first people to people to buy them from them

to make them wider tho they would have to make them stick out more....because they are going for the s10 markets too and they run a leaf spring and on my old s10 i was running 3rd gen z28 wheels and i was coming really close to having the back sides of the wheels&tires from rubing sooo i mean we may have room on our cars to widen w/o sticking out so much and i think the reason they made these wheels was to get other older cars involved too....take a look at there add....
"also fits late model s-series 2wd trucks and suvs"
.....also that means any monte older grand prix malibus and stuff too and unlike our cars i dont think they got as much room as we do. Hopefully they will get over the fact that its just a thing to see if it takes off but i dont know if they really care...i mean there no really depending on us little 3rd gen owners.

the fact that they are trying to hit the S10 market as well is fine and all, and since they already have the 8 inch one in production, everyone here is just trying to see if we might be able to get a 9+ inch version made.. And like everyone else, if they make one, I'll be one of the first to buy a set.

I hit them up with an email too. Gotta get some black ones in a wider size for the rear... If SLP doesn't make them, I may just have to by a set of 8 inchers and get them made into wider rims.

Everyone who is really intrested should definately keep in contact with them- this is a responce from my letter, which also linked them to this very post...

Thank you for your interest in SLP Performance Parts.

The decision to offer the new ZR-1 wheel in a 17 x 8" size grew out of our desire to make the wheel a direct bolt-on for as many applications as possible. Based on customer feedback, however, it would appear that there may be a viable market for larger sizes as well. As a result, we plan to look into the feasibility of offering the wheel in a 9" and/or 9.5" width. Be sure to sign up for our electronic mailing
list(http://www.slponline.com/iss/signup.asp) for all the latest product information.

As for the Hyper Black wheels, we hope to have picture on line in the next few days.

Thanks again for your interest.

Regards,

Team SLP PP
Seems that they just wanted a wheel that everyone could drop there stock tires or current tires on to.

Seems to me however by this responce, production for an 9 or 9.5" wheel is not out of the question.

Steve

I've heard of people fitting 275 40 17 rubber on 17x8 wheels... Is this unsafe? Even possible?

I think it would look odd. 255 is the maximum I'd go personally. There comes a point when all of the tread around the edge wouldn't be touching the pavement.

Hot damn, these have been my favorite style wheel for some time, I don't like buying the wheels and then $200+ worth of spacers though so I haven't gotten serious about them. I must have a set of these for my car. By the time I get the money together hopefully they'll have the 9 or 9.5s out, I just want to be able to run a 275 in the back without problems... Would 9 or 9.5 fit up front worth a crap?

Finally, I love that wheel, thank you SLP...

I got a reply back and they said they are seriously considering 9" or 9.5" at this point due to the overwhelming response they've gotten. Go email them now to push them over the edge, go!!!

Damn those are some nice rims...but yea 8" O_o...a little to thin in my opinion. THose look even nicer then the SS rims since they have a dish! compared to the SS's 1/2" lip.

they need 17x9.5s

i do have a question tho... ive heard conflicting opinions on the width for the front wheels, ive heard that a 9.5 width will rub and that an 8" is the best width to use, is this true?

well 8" is the "best" because it fits the best in the wheelwell. for performance and grip though, 8" kinda sucks..

9.5's, i think, rub a little if you turn too sharply, but when you're pulling into our out of a space, just take it easy and back up and go forward an extra time so it doensn't rub

i sent an email tellin them to make 9" and 9.5", but i'll probably just stick with the 8" because i don't have an extra $500 to shell out for new tires. the hyper black looks pretty good, alot better than the silver....to bad they're not making chromes....
