The fumes wouldn't be a problem if you only drive the car when you can roll the windows down. If you drive your car year round, or fill up in the rain and the windows are up, then the fumes can cause you to pass out from a lack of oxygen. That can't be a good thing for our nice cars(passing out because we filled up in our hatch).

Is there a way to use a different tank. Maybe one from the '79-'81 camaros that had the neck behind the license plate. Or modify our tank to be behind the plate. I think it's a great idea for verts, not such a good idea for a hatch though.

well i dont know about you, but my trunk unlock is behind the plate. i think that would be a huge PITA to relocate just to move your gas cap back there. I really dont think our caps look really bad. If you wanted you could shave the little lip for your finger to grab it off, then try and fab a sping release such as on 89ish cougars. Just put a button hooked to the release under your dash, voila. It may not be "shaved", but i think it would make an improvement. ALso it would stop any punks who try to put sugar or whatnot in your gastank as it is locked down when not open.

our caps (like most modern cars) are sealed. the cap does not vent.

thats what teh charcoal canister is for.... so no pass out/ explosion fuel worries.

you cant do it behind the plate... theres a large well there, and even if you put a tube across that (blocking the storage place, the pulldown motor, latch and lock are there.

i dont like the idea for a diff reason... the corrossive fumes will eat away at the inside of the fender there, and a slght spill, while harmless, will be easy to smell..

and btw, verts are open to back there too..... with the top up, you can see straight back there.. and with the top down, the only thing between you and it is the folded top.
plus no vert owner who drives their car is going to give up the trunk storage space.

well i think the fumes as a whole are pretty much assuming how your car is going to smell after "fuel-ups" which would be anavoidable however to most who are doing the modifications necessary i doubt they really care.

a saturn gas cap door fits right in.

if you take the cap, get the latch, hinge spring, and cable release.

you can then have a smoothie gas door that pops open when you pull the cable inside the car.

As Kandied mentioned, Redraif's car has a shaved gascap also...we did it about two years ago, and have had no real problems with it. There are some details about the mod on her website:

http://www.cardomain.com/id/redraif

Basically, we removed the tank and cut off the filler neck where it passes below the frame rail. I holesawed through the inner fender (same place as the original post ), then had a welding shop braze the end of the original filler to a piece of flexible exhaust tubing (Autozone). Just be sure to have them put a wet rag over the part where the flapper is, or the heat will ruin the spring and you will get some gas smell in the car.The new filler was attached to the original gas tank stub with a piece of heavy duty gas hose from NAPA, and clamped. She does have to be careful fueling the car, and found that turning the nozzle upside down helps avoid splashing fuel into the car.

We are planning to re-do the current filler setup, using a neck and clear tubing from one of the fuel cell companies (basically a circle track type filler). Either way, there should be no gas smell in the car as long as you don't overheat the flapper spring on the stock neck.

The actual shaving part wasn't too bad...just be sure you cut the patch panel very carefully, so there is minimal gap to fill with weld.

It'd be cool to do it like a '69 Camaro... right behind the flip down licence plate

Thats what I'd do if I shaved the cap.

As for the "halo" I can't see it, but maybe it is cuz the pic is kinda dark on my pc.

I was seriously thinking on putting a fuel door from another car onto my car. I am pretty sure I will go with a rectangular one, that will be popped by a cable control btwn my seat and the door. While I am at it, I am going to put in a rear hatch popper along with it.

I can't believe I am telling you guys this, but I think the donor car is going to be a 90 something CRX I found laying at the junk yard. Is it wrong to use Honda parts on my Camaro????

Oh well, I think it will look cool.

What do you guys think???

I guess i took it for granted that all thrid gens had an electric rear hatch. Why not just look for one off another 3rd gen?

I had the pulldown on my car, but it didn't work when I got it, and in an effort to:

1. Save weight
2. Not spend the time and money to fix the pulldown

I took the pulldown crap off, closed and latched the hatch with the interior panel off, and welded the pulldown mechanism into place. The hatch opens every time no problemo and I don't have to worry about that POS motor going out.

However, I think it would be nice to be able to get into the hatch without shutting off the engine and pulling my keys out of the ignition. The mechanism for the fuel door popper comes with a hatch popper too, so why not put it to good use.

Sorry about the thread, I didn't realize how old it was.

halo

Ok, obviousely some people in this forum have seen the car in person. Otherwise they couldn't be sure that it is a halo.....
Even if it was a halo, it would still look better than the damn cap

Thats not a circle in the paint. Its a paranormal phenomena known as "orbs". They are essentially unmanifested paranormal energy that cannot be seen by the naked eye, but can often be captured by pictures. Sometimes they even manifest themselves in the form of a gas cap, in its exact location. .... Havent you been watching your ghost hunters!

still don't understand how that little "hump" in the cap and the cap in general bugged you so much yet you left the handles sticking out like a sore thumb. at least it all flowed well together.

o'well it's your car...

Hey Jeff. I was thinking about shaving the locks, but leaving the handles. What do you think??? My car will see the drag strip from time to time, and they frown on not being able to open your door. I agree that our cars look better shaved, but if it takes purpose from my car, I won't won't WON'T do it.

I looked countless hours at photoshops of my car with different stages of shaving. For me it looks best the way it is now. I will repaint the car next year and the doorhandles will stay.

Who wants shaved handles. What do you do if your battery dies.I prefer flush mount door handles over the stock anyway

Hey Jeff. I was thinking about shaving the locks, but leaving the handles. What do you think??? My car will see the drag strip from time to time, and they frown on not being able to open your door. I agree that our cars look better shaved, but if it takes purpose from my car, I won't won't WON'T do it.

we just finished a 91 gt vert that we shaved the handles and added a lamborghini door kit. i have to say the lamorghini door kit makes more sense. shaving the locks is fine i suppose and i see the purpose but if your going to go through the trouble why not shave it all? reguardless though it is personal and i can see why one would want to shave the locks so do it if you like.
