LS1 back in Florida & why exhaust and lowering DON'T MIX
LS1 back in Florida & why exhaust and lowering DON'T MIX
Is it fast........
Did it cost alot..........
Was it worth every penny.....
Now on to the issue of lowering and getting some exhaust work done......Well let's just say it doesn't mix AT ALL......It's ridiculously low to the ground....
I'm hoping with the larger 19's it will raise the car at least something......although i may have to remove the lowering springs from the car.....
It's a custom exhaust to a SLP loudmouth system........
And last but not least....
The complete lack of clearance with the new custom exhaust........

well , why dont you just run , what would be a dual cat set up , with no cats and cuts outs in its place, you could get o2 sims, and then get a y pipe and run it into a single 3 or 4 inch to the back . get the electric cut outs like my old man has, boy are they sweet .

With the T56 you can get/make a custom tranny crossmember to allow the pipes to run right through the tranny tunnel. I've seen pics of that setup in the exhaust board before. That would definately clear up your exhaust clearance problems.

Thanks a lot dude... I ruined a perfectly good pair of trousers, they are now heavily soiled with waste and envy. Messy pants aside, CONGRATU-FRIGGIN-LATIONS, I certainly hope this means the END of ANY criticism for the "wannabe" appearance of your ride

great and all... but for the price, they should have done a MUCH better job with the exhaust... i would be severly disappointed if that was my car.
either mod or make a custom crossmember to allow the tubes thru, or notch and plate the "frame rail" to allow the tubes thru there.
having them go under the already questionably low T56 crossmember is absurd!

Man,
I hope you didn't pay too much for that, the exhaust work is unbelievable.. It looks like a hackjob..
My buddy charges like $500 to convert the LS1 harness plus whatever you want. He sets it up so you can plug right into the firewall, and if you send him your old harness he will splice the LS1 and TBI/TPI harness together. He uses soldering, aircraft-grade heat-shrink tubing, electric tape, and then relooms the whole harness like factory.
He can set you up with O2 sims, custom AC controllers if your car is old and never had AC, whatever..
If you guys are interested in getting a harness modified, you can email me or call DynatechMotorsports at 562-945-5300. Tell them that Colin sent you. If you don't think he knows his ****, ask him some technical questions..
Good luck with your car.. It's nice but I'm not big on the spoiler.. I bet it's plenty fast, though:hail:

Right now i'm rolling on some crappy salad shooter tires, as they are cheap and i can afford to do lots of reckless driving......
I do want to be a Honda, but the dealerships were out of I-VTEC engines, so I had to improvise......

Doughtnut video is on the way, need to find someone with a digital video camera.....

looking real good....gotta say that exhaust could be reworked a bit but as long as she works. can't imagine it staying on anyway if you keep her low.

get some pics of the wheels up soon! becareful taking turns hard and doing donuts though. good way to tear up your wheels with such a low profile....
all in all very nice though!

i know what it looks like there.
going under is the only easy out.
the only other options are to fab a custom crossmember that has clearance built in for the exhaust pipes,
or
chop out part of the "frame" and box it with some plate.. then exit there.

I'm going to weight my honest opinion in on this..
You did pay a lot for your swap. IF you did it yourself you could have saved atleast 5 grand. BUT, if you have the extra cash you are entitled to spend it however you want.
Your car is bitchin'. IF you took off the wing, it would look incredible.
Now, for all you haters. KMA, 90% of you are running TPI. If you think your car is so fast, maybe he should run you. I don't really like the spoiler, and I'm not big on his wheels, but the powertrain is twice what you have, with more potential.
I feel I can say that, because I have an LT1/M6 '72 Vega and my car is faster than most of yours

No one was doubting the LS1 either and trust me, I know their potential....I build them for a living. No need to try and school anyone here. i say it's slow........er!

those of you who keep talking about him getting ripped off need to have your head checked. id really like to know what these guys are thinking who believe that he overpayed and by 5 grand at that.
i tell you what, you come to my shop with a healthy ls1s, 6 speeds and computers ready to install with the harness, every other bs part needed to make these bastards work and run as well as the custom motor mounts (and good ones, not hacked up pieces) and put them in my cars all for under 5 grand and in under 2 weeks.
if you think you can do that no problem come on up with your parts. *** forbid you actually pull it off and have them tuned as well in that time i'll give you a job all day long.
$100 says by the second job your asking twice your price and you still won't be done in time.

what he paid isn't that far off to what the prices most shops are charging for such custom work. it may be a little high, it may be low in some areas.......he wasn't ripped off though as he's happy.

Kandied91z,
May I respectfully disagree? I work part-time for a guy that does LS1 and LT1 wiring harness conversions. He charges $300-$500 to convert the harness depending on options you want cut out or spliced into the harness. That includes splicing in the thirdgen harness into the LS1 harness.
Now, the actual swap itself is not impossible. Notching a crossmember takes about 2-3 hours. I've read up on it and it's not 'that' hard. Now that it's been accomplished numerous times there's a reasonable amount of data available for researching the swap.
The motor mount plates are available retail now from many companies.
The exhaust is not impossible, and while as MrDude1 says you should modify the T56 crossmember, it is not that hard to do the modification he suggests.
Many people will reflash LS1 PCMs for a reasonable price..
I'm sorry, I do this kinda stuff in my spare time. I'm in the process of getting my LT1/T56 1972 Vega up and running and it's straight forward. True, while my Vega is much simpler than a thirdgen, I have done my share of modifications during this swap. I am currently in the design process for a tubular K-Member and have made my own motor mount setup.
I was just saying, he did pay quite a bit but other shops also charge for their time (whereas my time is spent cranking wrenches and doing my own customization).
My car should run mid 12s when I'm done, at the very least. 300hp in a 2200# car make for a fun car..
I dunno, different strokes for different folks. I'm coming from the technical side because I researched the swap for my Vega but found that the exhaust will not clear my body. I didn't want to full-tube my car so I said screw it and went with the LT1.
My $0.02

colin

I dont think he had the knowledge to do it himself plus finding a good shop here in tallahassee to do that kind of work and trust it have not found one yet most shops up here suck. The car looks great can not wait to see it in person.

If you take a modest shop rate, say 60 bucks an hour (which is pretty cheap) and lets say two 40 hour weeks which ought to cover getting the old motor/tranny out, notching k-member and fabbing up a tranny crossmember, and drop in an assembled LS1/tranny you'll come up with 4800 bucks....which will cover getting the motor physically bolted into the car. Plus all of the wiring, splicing, and getting everything to run right plus fab up an exhust and you're looking at well over 5k.
Of the total amout of money i spent on the car.........less than 20% of it was for labor......
So no matter what crazy numbers you are comming up with, for parts ALONE, you are looking at $8,000.......that is the total amount i spent just on parts for the car......

I would agree with the opinions on the exhaust tho that things gonna be bent in half in no time
