I bought a carpet steam cleaner that has an upholstery tool. My brother bought a late model cheap because the upholstery was all stained, and we used the carpet spot remover and the upholstery tool on the steam cleaner, and the interior now looks new. You might check and see if a rental carpet cleaner has an upholstery attachment? You will be amazed what it will suck out of your carpets and upholstery.

Good luck

Oxy-clean, that stuff does WONDERS. I had stains at least 2 or 3 years old come out w/ a solution of the stuff. And its pretty cheap for the amount you get. I think its like $6 for a 5 lb tub or so? And all you need is a little scoop for your solution.

I agree with TA, a steam cleaner, the ones like a vacuum, with the accessory tool, and then some kind of spot remover. That's the best I've used... makes the car smell fresh too. It pulls some nasty stuff out of the carpet...
