Painting runners / plenum

I've been wanting to paint my runners and plenum (possibly valve covers) body color for awhile.

How much prep work is necessary for the paint to get a good hold on the metal? I don't *want* to go through all of the polishing, but in my spare time, I will if it's necessary.

Thanks in advance.

I painted my runners, plenum, and valve covers.

I started with a BIG ole can of carb cleaner to clean all of the crap in the runners and plenum. The I used some soap and water on everything. The runner and valve covers need a little scotch-brite for texture.

I used Plasti-Kote engine enamel on everything, and it all looks AWESOME!!!

I sandblasted my runners and plenum and wirebrushed my valve covers. Sandblasting is the way to go to get into all the nooks and crannies, especially if you stuff is really dirty like mine was. Anyway, my engine went from this

to this

I know this is an old thread, but I came across it and noticed the color of your runners and plenum is similar to candy red. I've been trying to find paint that color for a while now and am having a hard time. Is that actually candy red (silver base, candy, clear) or is it just a regular red?

hey 88blkiroc i like how you did yours. did you powdercoat it or paint it? either way what color is it? i think that would look great on mine and match the paint pretty well.

I'm pretty sure it's painted. It's the same color as my fuel rail.

This is the best picture showing the rail. More pics of the motor are at my website below.

Very intresting thread. I live in the MASS area and dont know anyone who powdercoats. I need someone local though. So im prob gonna get some Plasti Kote and spray paint it. This is for my L98 Vette though.
