I know exactly what you're talking about - the brillant-white light of expensive cars (like Lexas, BMW, etc.) that catches my attention every time.

They're called HID for High Intensity Discharge. And they're more than just a different bulb. They are a lot brighter than halogen, run cooler, more shock resistant and use a lot less current, but are a lot more expensive ("you get what you pay for").

I too would like a pair (I could do w/o the high beam), but the cost of a pair would not make it worthwhile.

You can get a bulb that imitates that type of light, but they fall very short of the better qualities of HID lights. These "fake" HID lights are often just xenon or halogen bulbs with a blue coating. JC Whitney www.jcwhitney.com has a good selection of bulbs for under $15, but you'll have to get a reflector (non-sealed) to accept the bulb. But remember, nothing will perform like HID but a true HID lighting system - and you'll pay for it!

There are a number of manufactures that make or distribute HID automotive lighting systems. You should be able to find some by doing a search on the Internet.

If I were going to get some HID lights, I'd probably get them from Phoenix Micro-light Inc. Nighthawk Off Road in California (where else?). See www.galaxymall.com/auto/microlite/products.html for their selection. Their 4x6 rectangular HID sealed beam (p/n 6138) is $265 each ($530 pair) for the ballast and bulb. They state "off road pattern", but I do not know if they are street legal - I did not see anything about "for off road use only". They have a wide variety of HID lights (as well as other auxiliary lights) that appear to be high quality.

Go to www.hamsar.com/high_intensity_discharge_vs_HALOGEN.htm to see the advantages of HID over halogen. Also note the temperature of HID (the Phoenix is 4250° K) and how it relates to incandescent and sunlight at that site.

If you do get HID lights, you'll probably be the only non-luxury car on the road with them.

Please make a post if you do go ahead with them and let us know the details.
