so whats the diffrence between polishing and waxing

i ve seen some mention of polishing over waxing. high end paint users says polishing is better than wax. jeff (Kandied91z)says only polish.

so what products would be a polish and what would be a wax just for comparison. how does polish react diffrent than wax?

thanks jeff

wax is a sealant....some wax products also contain oils that can ruin or help to fade a paint job over time however on older paint they have chemicals that help to polish or basically clean the top discolored coat. the wax "protectant" helps seal this new clean coat which in turn ads depth.

it's best for paint to breath....however after quite some time some choose to wax in order to protect paint. it really comes down to preference as you can ruin a paintjob with either if you aren't careful.

thanks jeff.......so polish give you a shine but no protection or little protection.....but the plus side no buildup or seal so paint can breath.

how long does polish last? and does it bead up water like wax does?

thanks again jeffW

depends on the polish...typically a few weeks though give or take. it "can" bead up like wax but it shouldn't....it isn't the same thing. water typically shouldn't bead up on your car anyhow....if you are doing the right things, using the right products the water should roll off the car in sheets.

all varies with preference. i use a product made by wizards which you can find at alot of body shops or online. some of the professional series mothers/meguiars also work nicely. just have to be sure not to use a cutting polish.

experiment and do whats right for you....a true show car with perfect paint will never see wax. however a daily driver weekend cruiser the paint won't survive if you don't eventually. i've just started using some wax on certain things now that my paint is over 6 years old. once it's repainted in the winter i won't for another 6 years. eventually though you'll have to otherwise the polish will rub off your paint.

what if you polished and then waxed? wouldn't that eliminate the negatives of doing just one or the other?

Polish vs Wax

I prefer Polish vs Waxing...I have found this product that is far superior to any wax..Its a polish developed by a guy who Restores cars for a living and has a Masters Degree in Chenistry..This is the finest product on the market that I have found..and I have tried them all...Question...What does Wax do when it gets hot? It melts...your car sitting in the sun all day long..its bad for you finish..and it builds up too..And thats why you should never wax your car in the sun..Well with this polish you can polish your car in the hot sun..with no streaks, no build up, and in half the time it takes to wax and with much less effort..It protects against UV rays, acid rain, and beads up like you wouldn`t believe...And it Lasts too..I have a 3rd Gen Camaro with a 17 yr old paint job and it looks like new...I get compliments on it everyday..and anyone who has ever tried this product will never try anything else..They also have a "Quick Detail" spray that you use between polishes that is supurb to anything on the market today..And this product in not in stores...Its called Protective Polish...and if you want to know more about it, just drop me a line and I will fill you in..

Polish vs Wax

Yes, this Polish IS better for your paint than any wax..And you will love how it goes on and how easy it comes off..And the shine and protection is like no other that I have tried..A 12oz bottle of the Polish is $12.00 and should be good for 4 polishes on an average size car, and the Perfect Detail comes in a 20oz spray bottle and costs $9.00..Write me at Roadvoyeur@hotmail.com if you would like to give it a try..It is fully guanteed..

you should always polish before you wax....

i use a clay bar, polish and then a wax on my daily. i love the quick fix appeal of wax but for my z28 it's not an option i prefer.

oh, sorta off subject but how long is it supposed to take to use the clay bar? I spent about 4 hrs with mine just to be sure because I didn't experience any of the "scratching" that I guess you're supposed to hear. I can tell it worked, tho, because my car looks great, but I'm wondering if you're supposed to take 4 hrs...

Polish will make it shine but it doesnt protect the paint long at all, I wouldnt reccomend not waxing on anything unless its rarely in direct contact with the sun or otherwise you will get oxidation quicker. Clay bar will remove unwanted dirt and debris from the paint as well as build up from products such as wax and occasionally overspray. This will help prevent unwanted swirl marks and oxidation from built up materials. If you have a "polishing" product that protects the paint then it more than likely contains wax or some type of synthetic protectant making it supposedly a mix of polish compound and wax... but not just polish. My car is my daily driver and show car so I keep it clean and waxed, polish and wax it about once a month, clay bar it every three, and then right before summer Ill go over it with a rubbing compound and wool pad which helps out alot... then I go over with polishing compound and then wax I use all 3M stuff aside from wax, if your just looking to polish pick up the Perfect It I - Swirl Mark Remover it used to be titled as polish but they've change the line names to a 3 stage system I believe and the buffing compound is Perfect It III.. if that makes sense. Seems to be a good system tho there was a very tiny bit of oxidation on my roof when I got it.

My dad used Zano Products on his 2000 SS and it looked amazing. It had several steps not sure if it was wax or polish but as clean as you got it with previous steps you wouldnt have to worry about trapping anything under wax.

zaino has build up just like wax....better then wax but all the same. decent product but too much, then again if you value your paint you might not mind the 2 days needed for their process every few weeks.
