flaking clear coat....

I just bought a 89 convertable and it has been treated poorly, there are several large spots on the car that have flaking clear comming off, what is the propper method to reduce the unsightliness of this, i dont have the cash now to repaint it.

Should i wet sand these spots, what grit ?

What polishers and waxes should i use ?

Thanks guys !

is the clear gone in the areas that it has flaked? you may be able to slightly skuff it and reshot the clear. not sure weather or not it will last though.

The clear seems to be gone, although i dont know how many layers of clear are on the car, how many layers did orig. paint jobs have ? The paint is still shinny where the clear is gone. The areas affected have a "snowflake" type pattern missing. This is mostly on the sides of the car example: doors tops of fenders, and a little on the trunk lid.

Sounds like someone has done poor prep work when painting something on the car... (Usually indicative of MAACO's work.)
Is it the whole car, or maybe just a section? (Front or rear... side?)
You can determine if it is just the clear by the color, Is what's flaking milky white or car color...?
Either way, you'll need to re-shoot to make the car right... The paint won't stop peeling until one of two things happens; the peeling part hits the end of the panel... or it finally reaches a spot that they actually SANDED.

That was pretty common on the 86-89 GM cars and trucks. I had a 86 Camaro that I bought new and after about 5 years the clear started to flake. I memtioned this to my Chevy dealer when I bought a new SS 454 truck, and they told me that if you were the original owner of the car/truck GM would repaint the car. They did so and also gave me a 5yr garantee on the paint. This was not a recall from GM, you had to complain to them, and then they would do the repaint.

We're talking about two different animals here, GM VERY rarely had any CLEARCOAT peeling. That's usually the sign of a re-paint.
HOWEVER, they did have a massive delamination campaign in those years... When I first started for the dealership, that's all we were doing, about 2-3 a week, complete paintjobs, strip to steel and re-build from groun up. But the delamination occurred from the ELPO or E-COAT, primer and the base coat... That's why I asked if the clear only was peeling.
The delamination problem is denoted by a greenish gray color under the paint where all the finish had peeled off.

No, GM has since denied that any such problem has ever existed...
They have told my customers,TO THEIR FACE, that those repairs were on a case by case basis, decisions made by the dealership management!!!

My car is being painted right now b/c of this. If I had to bet, I would say your car was built in Van Nuys.

And it looks just like this:
Cadillac: Youv'e got a couple different things goin' on there...
The quarter and possibly the spoiler has been painted...
The lid looks like degradation, and yes, I did forget about that problem... The paint dried out for a couple years in 88-89, poss 90-91. You would get a chalky dry white mess and there was nothing you could do to save it. But strip it to elpo and reprime and seal and shoot.
