Is there such a thing as waxing your car too much?

Yes...at some point you can actually start removing paint. If you have gotten to that point...stop now!

yeah...you can wax to much and will damage the paint. Use polish......it's the best..you can use it as much as you want...and it out shines wax. Wax is for protection...polish is basically to shine and make slick...that's all I use....

I used to wax my car with Meguiars NXT, and it looked good. Then last week I polished it with Meguiars Deep Crystal....my lord what a difference. It shines a million times better with the polish!! I keep the car clean and don't drive it much anyways, so I dont think I'll have to worry about no wax on the paint.

And yes you can wax your car too much. Most waxes can only do 1 or 2 coats, then it gets repetitive and wastes your time...and you can actually damage your paint like previously said

I believe thats where he infered that polish won't remove paint since you said you can use it as much as you want.

-BTW I used the new platinum turtle wax and I must say it works very well.

the bottom line is that waxing to much can damage the paint ALOT more then polishing it...

You guys have this polish/wax think backwards! You polish the finish to take out minor scratches, oxidation, swirles, etc. in order to get a glossy, "defect free" surface. Some polishes use abrasives that actually remove paint in order to achieve this surface. If you don't put a protective "film" on this nice new surface, it will immediately start to deteriorate.

So, after you get that great shine out of you polishing job, put a coat of wax on! When the wax starts wearing off, put another coat of wax on and when that wax starts wearing off, .........

Eventually the elements will penetrate the best of wax jobs and create new "defects" that will need to be polished out and we start the process over.

If you want to make that paint job last as long as possible, POLISH as infrequently as possible and WAX as often as is required.

Look, yes anything will damage the paint if overdone. But polish is specifically designed to smooth out the paint itself. That means abrasive compounds to physically remove the paint. If we're just talking about what "could" do more damage, it's the polish hands down. Do a few wide swirls on your hood with a little too much pressure and that paint is going to need sanding. Do the same thing with wax and all you need is a cotton cloth to buff it smooth.

I consider the paint on my car to be in good condition. Yesterday I did a fender with polish and noticed no difference (Car has a coat of nxt on it). I reapplied some nxt and it looked even better.

You have to remove the wax before polishing.

hell, if you use water to much over a period of time..the paint will come off. The paint will come off if you use anything over a period of time. Paint doesn't last forever..

Yea, but I would rather my paint job shine for 20 years with proper care than 5 years with improper care. I mean, if you are going to go to the trouble of "protecting" that paint job, might as well do it right! That's all I'm trying to say here!

Unless you live in a harsh environment, every other week is probably too often. Try once a month and see if you can keep the shine going.

Waxing once a week is a lot. You should wax at MOST once a month, and at least once every 6 months, unless you really drive the car a lot and go offroading with it or something. You should learn how to tell when it needs wax to get the best results, though.

I haven't polished either of my Camaros yet, but I've been letting the wax gradually disappear off the paint of my 86 so that I can start. It's been almost 4 months and there's still a bit of wax on it, and I drive the thing every day.

yeah, that sounds about right. The reason I don't wax is because my car isn't open to the elements...mostly sits in the garage. Plus, polish outshines wax by like 100 times on my paint. ( I've tryed a small portion of wax on it, didn't like it)

Unfortuneately its a bit of a trade off. Polish looks better but wax protects better. If ya got a show coming up or a hot date, use the polish. If ya got nothing goin' on and it's just your daily or weekend driver, then use the wax.

this is my first car and the only car i have so i drive it almost every day....so i just wax it when it looks like it needs it....like when i start seeing swirly marks in the paint and all the lil scratches start showing up again...(my car is black so theres almost no way i can avoid a couple lil scratches especially where i live) i use that turtle wax black wax on my car
