has anyone done this? take ground affects from a newer camaro and put it on there early 3rd gen? if so, do you have pictures? and if noone hasnt, do you think it would look good?

 

Your going to have to change the front and back bumper. Then if your car didnt have the early ground effect, you have to drill holes in the doors, fenders, and rear quarters. Also gonna need to fab up a bracket to hold on the rocker panel. The bracket on the 85 and up cars are welded to the body.

Definately doable if you can get a good deal on the whole set. I did it on my 84 but dont have any install pics.

 

so ill have to replace the front bumper? i shouldve been more specific i am just talking about the front ground affect. if i get a front ground affect i cant just unbolt the stock one and bolt on the one from an 87? im ok with drilling holes and stuff in them to attach it to the bumper cover but it seems like alot of work for just swapping front ground affects?

 

you do have to replace the bumpers

 

yeah the contour of the front bumper is slightly different from the 82-84 style to the 85-90 style so it wont line up correctly.

 

You dont necessarily need to change your FRONT bumper.If you want to keep that early look.Personally i like the look of the 82-84Z Fr.bumpers,but i like the later style GFX & Rr bumper.I took the later style Fr. GFX & cut it where it lines up with the fender/bumper seam.I then cut my 84 Fr. GFX in the same spot.I then spread out the 84 piece so it would have the same taper as the later style.You might see the two sections in this pic.

so its only the sides that dont match up? right in front of the front wheels? and all i would have to do is cut both GFX at that seam and find a way to hold them together? sounds easy enough, i think im up for it, thanks!

 

I got this pic from chevycamaro.com, if memory serves me correct, it's an '84 with a '92 ground effects kit. Looks sweeeeet to me

 

Try contacting xpndbl3 on these boards. When I swapped my 85-90 ground effects for the 91-92's, he took my old stuff for his 84 Z.

 

Car didn't originally come with ground effects.. I added this stuff off of an 82..



Then this last summer I upgraded to 85 Z28 stuff..

I should clarify this a little more.The sides DONT match up comestically(the 84 is shorter than the later by about 1.5 inches),but mechcanically they differ only by an extra bolt at the end in front of the wheel.The 84 uses a plastic rivet while the later type use a bolt.Also the two are NOT held together.They are completely seperate items.I can remove the bumper & the stock 84 GFX bolted to the bumper with the end piece still on the fender.The 82-84 Front GFX are completely different in the way they bolt to the bumper,but not as much in they way they bolt on the fender.If you want to keep that early look.Youll have to find a way to do this mod(i only did this for cosmetic reasons,so the end of the GFX matches the rocker GFX in its width(taller than the 84).Anyway,As far as the rest of the GFX stuff goes.It should bolt right on with NO mods.including both bumpers (if your wanting to update looks).
