Change the color of my "Bowtie"?
I took my grill out because I'm going with Satin instead of Gloss. Anyhow, the bowtie isn't looking very good...so..I have a few options. Re-paint it Red or I could go with a Silver. What do you think?

I vote for silver... no particular reason. I've seen a lot of them red though. I was gonna do mine blue, still might someday.

Hey, instead of painting it silver there is this stuff called "Bare Metal Foil" that can be picked up at most hobby stores. It's actual purpose is to do chrome trim on model cars it is a very thin aluminum foil with a strong adhesive backing.
So what I was thinking you might try is to get some of this foil and apply it to the bowtie then burnish it on really good, trim around the bowtie with a sharp knife and "BLAM" you've got the only chrome bowtie around to match your rims!
I've used the "Bare Metal Foil" in several places on my car and although it is sometime difficult to get applied just how I want it the end result is nothing short of amazing.
There is also so polish available for this foil that really makes it shine. Good Luck!

thanks for the input guys
I'll be working on it tomorrow and will hopefully post some pictures up. I'm not looking for any bling bling....just a nice sillver..like a brushed effect. I already prepped and sprayed the grill with satin black. I really don't think I want to spray the bowtie...I would rather make a pattern and make a new bowtie out of thin gauge aluminum or maybe a thin plastic and paint it aluminum...I'll let ya know what happens

It will complement your car nicely. It came factory with red, so all of the stock cars with bowtie grille have red, so you could hardly be 84customZ28. Nothing custom about stock. LOL.
I also like the "foil" idea from Sideburnz.

That looks real good, but I'd really like to see if that clear coat made the grill appear semi-gloss like stock. (how they should be, not high-gloss) Need better pictures.
BTW, you do know that the lights in your grill are backward/facing the wrong way, right??

Satin grille
Who cares if it was satin from factory, the bowtie wasn't silver from factory. I think the grille should be gloss, because the car is glossy, and it makes for a more seemless appearance.
I hope you don't think I am copying you Shawn, but I plan on using gloss black bowtie grille with silver painted bowtie. I actually had been planning that for some time, just haven't acted on it yet.
I may paint the bowtie gunmetal also, because I am planning a two tone possibly with gunmetal for the accent color.

Getting the stock semi-gloss look was the reason he sprayed it.....

And about the foglights, yeah, they've been like that for awhile...I just hate to keep taking this car apart...but..I'll swap'em around next spring

I painted mine body color when the car was painted. The bowtie was covered in silver-reflective vinyl decal.

Fireball, where did you get that decal!? That is exactly what I am looking for. I know a guy that makes overlays for fourth gens but I am not sure if it will fit. Got any more pics of your car? Looks nice.

Hello again everybody just wanted to drop back in because I keep hearding you all talk about how cool a chrome or brushed aluminum look bowtie woud look.
If you look up my post on hear you will find out a little about a stuff called "BARE METAL FOIL" it is available at any hobby store that carries a large selection on model car & planes.
I have built model cars for years cheaper than working on the real thing all the time and this product called "BARE METAL FOIL" comes in a small package for between $5 - $10, it is also available in chrome, brushed aluminum, gloss black and wood grain. The product is exactly what they say it is it's very thin aluminum foil with a adhesive back. Those of use who build model cars use it alot for making highly realistic trim around like down the side and around the windows of a 1955 Chevy for instants since the trim is moded on to the plastic model and as we all know no paint can even come close to chrome. So the modeling industy made this.
It's a little hard to apply when you first star tring to use it because it so thin it's easy to get a wrinkle and even harder to pull that wrinkle up without tearing the foil if you use too much pressure and takes a really sharpe acto-knife to trim.
I have use this quite abit on my real car, just make sure if you use it on the exterior of your car to polish it out first then add a clear coat to pro tect it

i have used bare metal foil many times on models and it works well. As for me....I don't want a chrome...foiled looking bowtie....thats why I chose not to use bare metal foil....I think it would really make the car look cheap with a foil bowtie.

I did not mean to offend anybody on here I just noticed alot of people were talking about how the chrome or brushed aluminum look would also look good. As a matter of fact I believe you, yourself to have mentioned it earlier on this thread.
Once agian I am sorry to have offend anybody in this thread by putting in a simple, economical, and easy way of acheieving the look that some might desire.

Mike,
Here is another pic taken at my friend's place the day I finished putting her back together after painting.
I got some decal material, xacto knife, masking tape, and a beer.
Masked off the bowtie so I would not damage the paint. The masking tape is not as tacky as the decal material that might pull off the paint. I stuck the material to the bowtie and carefully trimmed with the xacto. I think this was my third attempt. Just need some time and alot of patience. (The beer helped!)

I got some scrap from a local sign shop. I know the owner. I was thinking of doing it in red-reflective. But when I decided to paint the grill body color instead if black, the red would not look right. I am going to do the bowtie in red-reflective on my friends 91 RS since he put the Z28 grill on it.
