stock wheel clearcoat

I have the OEM 15x7 rims on my 91 bird. Did they put some crappy clearcoat on them or something? Mine sorta cracking so the wheels always look dirty er crappy. How could I solve this problem? Is there any way to strip the clear besides sand/media blasting?

Get some Aircraft paint remover. It's harsh, so use gloves, but it's the best.

ok...this is what i did..
taped up the inside painted areas with masking tape, apllied a thick coat of aircraft remover with a paintbrush, let sit for a hour and a half, useed a scaper to scrape the slime off, used water hose to spray of everything else, used 600 grit sand paper to rub out any blemishes, then used mothers rim cleaner to polish and buff. everything can be found at your local autoparts store.

If you remove the clearcoat, will your wheels get diry a lot easier, or be harder to clean??

well if you spend time with your car at least everyother weekend, then you should not have a problem. but, as an alternative, after you strip the clear, and finish the rims, you can apply a new coat of clear and the maintenance should be easier...

I have the same question. I read on some other post somewhere that after stripping and polishing them, you will have to polish them like every time you wax the car since it's bare aluminum and it rusts. Could you mebbe re-clear them? If so, how durable would it really be?

Thanks,
Evan
