Mudflaps !

I know mudflaps are horrible, but I live 4 miles down a rock road.
So its either mudflaps or ruined paint . I have factory GM ones that say Z28. I was just wondering what other options I have.
Any input will be appreciated and no I'm not gonna move.

3M makes this clear plastic film stuff that they put on new cars (typicly mid-high end cars) as an option......my dad has it on his G35......its cool cause it protects the paint and stuff (its just on the fenders, bumper, front of the hood, etc.), but what i dont like is how you can clearly see it even with the car being a light color....
Just something to think about though

you could make a set out of lexan that way it would be clear and maybe less noticeable. Just use the stock ones as a template

I was thinking about putting some flaps like the firebird style on my gta. Not sure how it would look but i hate that dust getting on the side of my car because my driveway is dirt. I dont even take the driveway most of the time, just go through the front yard.

Mud Flaps

I use mud flaps on my 82 Z-28, they've been on there since I had the car painted in 94. I bought the ones that fit the best and then I went to the Home Depot and bought 4 pieces of 11x14" plexiglass along with one of the cutters for plexiglass. Used the mud flap as a template and cut it out with the cutter, then used some sand paper and a sander to finish off the edges. Look just like the store bought ones but you can't see them as easily being clear. Then if you want you can put some of the Bow Tie emblems on them to dress them up or firebird emblems, if Firebird, that you can buy at any auto parts store. Works for me and I got the idea from a Corvette owner that I saw at a car show. I say go for it..

do you by chance have a picture of that? i race ALOT and am about ready to paint the new project, and it's getting a white paint job, and black rubber would show up really bad on that.

yet the fact still remains they are mud flaps... you know.. to stop mud from getting on your car... soo when they get dirty instead... im guessing youd still be able to see them.

mud flaps have to be the worst idea for a thirdgen i've ever seen. They are my pet peeve on a thirdgen. They're even worse than the rear window louvers.

I don't think they look worse than my paint job would look without them.

No way are they as bad as window louvers. I don't like the look of the flaps but if they protect your paint if you live on a dirt/gravel road then by all means, do what you have to. My car won't ever get them because I only travel down a gravel driveway once or twice a year.

FYI, i would use real Lexan, not plexi. Plexi (Acrylic) is more likely to crack/break when hit with a rock. The Lexan (Poly-carbonate) will take more shock, but will also scratch easier. Plexi is cheaper though.

Also, plexi is not as pliable (flexible) and with high speeds may crack at the mounting holes...

I'll try to get a picture to post, as for breakage with the plexi, what you say is true, however I've only broken one if I hit with something, such as my jack or something on the ground. You're right in that plexi doesn't have much flex to it, and that is why I use it. I've had them on my car for better part of 10 years and I only replaced the 2 in the front this year due to my hitting one with my jack and breaking it. As for high speed wind breakage, well I can tell you that the times I've been in the triple digit speeds that has never happened. I got some lexan but just thought it was too soft or flemsy for my liking.

at least someone agrees with me on lexan.. you wont break it. whereas plexi will only give so much then it breaks

Call me a *******, but I actually don't mind the look of mudflaps.

Plus they protect your paint, so I don't know why they should be looked down upon.

i was thinkin, if the mudflaps are to reduce the amount of rock chips in the paint and whatnot, wouldn't they scratch the new clear mudflaps up really bad and make them look bad? i don't know, i'm thinkin' maybe a set of black ones are the way to go.

what i would like to see is moldings like those found on the 2nd generation TA's, only on the back side of the tire instead of the front.

I have ones that say Trans AM on them on my 91 GTA.

I bought it from the original owner and he had them on since new.

It only had 17k on it at the time.

I thought about it and left them there, they were made for he car back in the day and blend in fairly nicely, scrub them down and shine them up and they look fine.

My intents are to keep the car nice, cept for the retarded kid who decided to run into me while driving and the !#$%@ in a parking lot I have done that.

later

I bought the car in Rochester when I lived in Brooklyn Park. I moved to FL in late '02 and finally registered the car down here last summer. FL wants $200/car when you bring them in from out of state, so I took my time in getting FL plates!!

mudflaps are a nessessity around here in the back country of BC.. like 40% of the roads I travel are gravel/dirt. Not to mention we only have a few seasons for driving, and they all have rocks on the road; winter (sand trucks) spring (sweepers throwing the rocks around) and road constructioin/maintenance (more gravel, rocks, and paving)... mud flaps are a must.

I do like the clear ones!!

Ok guys i have a few installtion Q's...

I picked up a pair of factory GM mudflaps (Similar to the kind cadillac has, but they say camaro on them) for $10 from my local chevy dealer!! But anyway, the plan is to mount them, with out drilling holes in the fender. This is what i have come up with so far...

We wil drill 2 holes in each mudflap, tha twill correspond with the 2 bolts in the fender, so essentially the bottom portion of the mudflap will be held on by those. As for the top part of the mudflap, we're going to use like a little clip that will hold the mudflap to the brim/edge of the fender (on the inside). But the problem lies in how we will get the middle part of the mudflap to stay attached. If we were to simply just use the 2 bolts and then the clip at the top, there would a gap between the middle of mudflap and the body. It would only be like 1/4 of an inch, but if possible, i would like to mount the mudflaps flush against the body. If anyone knows of a way to secure the middle part on, without drilling holes, give me some ideas...

I mean if i cant find a way, ill just leave the gap as it is, its not a BIG deal, but id prefer that they were flush. Also, i PMed my man cadillac with these sames q's, seeing as he is the only one with the same mudflaps, but he has yet to get back to me....
