Underside of hood

I'd like to see what some have done with the underside of their hoods. Maybe the camaro symbol embossed into the heat shield. Maybe some paint or airbrush effects. Also I noticed it seems like there are exposed fasteners for the IROC louvers, they stick about 3/4" down towards the engine. Has anyone made something or found a shield to create a flat surface in this area?

Thanks
John

I and most people probably have insulators there. The extreme heat would probly destroy paint.

On a show only car I like mirrors that reflect a nice engine.

They were put there for a reason. I did not use one with my fiberglass cowl induction and it was fine.

I think the insulator was there for noise more than heat. I have had mine off for 8 years with no ill effects to the paint.

I also have insulation on my hood. The problem is over the years it is getting pretty crappy looking. I would just pull it off, but the hood looks ugly with the iroc louver fastners sticking down everywhere. I think the insulation is mainly for noise reduction. Either way it isn't doing much good. The mirrors is an interesting idea, however I'm concerned they may yellow or look bad with the heat. I do drive my car enough that this is a concern. Any ideas?

Thanks
John

i drove mine for 6 years without one but the underside was nice and painted. i used mirrored plexi glass for the stock hood that was cut out for the little areas. for my last ss hood i had just one large center section that was cut out of mirrored plexi. i've seen some use very thin stainless that was polished. it is all preference.

buying a new insulator is always an idea as well.

Kandied, do you have any pics of either setup? My plan is to remove the insulation paint the underside body color, then do something with it then. You didn't have any problems with the mirrored plexiglass fading, yellowing, or blurring? Where did you get the plexiglass?

Thanks

insulator is there for noise, not heat. you can safely remove it.
odds are very good now that its no-longer a effective noise dampener, and on some cars, it could be oil-soaked... a potential fire hazard.

So has anyone made some sort of cover for ugly part of the hood, or used different fastners? Any other pictures of what others have done with their hoods?

Thanks
John

yes, you can not leave the plexi there all the time, it was for show purposes only.

Interesting. So you held them in with velco, or something?

I'm still leaning towards custom painting there, but this an a cool idea.

That looks really clean. What material is that and what did you use to fasten it on?

Is this an iroc or stock style hood? Do you have any pics of the whole underside of the hood. I'd like to see how and where he mounted the aluminum plate. I'm not crazy about the aluminum look, but i could certainly paint it body color.

Also carmotorsports doesn't seem to have any for my car. Only for 83-84 camaros for some reason. I'll have to call them tomorrow. They do look nice though.

This may answer part of your question, it doesn't matter what hood you have.. the underlying reinforcement is the same. Only the topside skin was different (kind of like the reason the 'bird and camaro look different outside).

As far asw the liner.. strictly noise.

Black paint on a summer, cloudless, Arizona day... is the motor hotter or the paint?
Answer that and you'll answer the insulator mystery.

So the next question would be...is that a stock hood? I'd like to see where he mounted the aluminum plate.

Each side it’s a piece of furnace isolation, I made 2 steel braces and I used screws and plastic anchor like those we use for dry wall to hold it.
Before I paint my car myself...for practice...I painted the underside gray and made the black stripe with basecoat + clearcoat
