Am I the only '91 T/A owner with regular spoiler?

So a couple months ago my Aerowing was damaged beyond repair and I haven't been able to justify buying, shipping, and painting a new one....basically $5-600 just to have what I broke when money is better spent elsewhere.

So I bought a 1983 T/A spoiler, you know the style that came standard on most 3rd gens. I am wondering does anyone have a '91 T/A with the standard spoiler and not the aerowing? I do miss the aerowing, but damn the rear view has gotten so much better w/o it and I used to have 2 Firebirds and I missed the base spoiler. Also, visually the tires appear more massive in width. Which is a plus. It must have to do with the smaller wing. If you look at 4th gen T/As that came with the base spoiler and Convertables you know what I mean. The tires appear wider with the shorter deck spoiler.

So is anyone in the same boat, does anyone have pics of their '91 with this spoiler?

That is all.

I've seen one with no spoiler on here before, looks a little odd. Check ebay, they have plenty of TA's with the base spoiler. A lot of them even come with V6's!

look at 91 base birds with the TA appearance package. They had those groundeffects with a regular bird wing. That is how mine came until i swapped the aero spoiler on it. As for the aero price... yeah they are expensive. But you can get lucky and find one on ebay for under a 100 if they don't offer shipping.

Oh yeah, to install the base spoiler, your gonna have to drill 2 new holes in the hatch and fill the 2 you cant use. Might be easier to pick up the whole hatch.

I already have it on, drilled all the holes as the Aerowing holes aren't in the right space. Really easy. I was just wondering if anyone else has a T/A with base spoiler. If not, then I have a 1-of-a-kind!

As for looking at firebirds, duh Buuuuuuut Firebirds lack the 16x8 wheels, 245 tires, and T/A hood.

I also refuse to pay $460 shipped for a replacement aero spoiler for my 88 GTA.

I didn't use the standard pedestal Firebird spoiler because I feel it looks too small for the car. I'm in the process of using a Fiero spoiler. It's much larger and I like the way it fits the body lines better. Looks like it's meant for the car.

And since it has no 3rd brake light, I'll be using a LED 3rd brake light from a late 90's Chevy SUV.

FieroGTA, I was actually looking for a Fiero GT wing because it was basically an oversized Base spoiler. However, the pics I have seen the owners had to sit the wing back due to the holes in the hatch don't line up with where the spoiler "SHOULD" sit. Meaning it will sit back further than it should aesthetically.

BigWhiteGTP, I understand where your coming from.

When you say where it "should" sit, basicly your talking about how the spoiler lines up in the rear on the decklid area, doesn't go beyond it, like it is with the factory 85 T/A spoiler.

But because of the Fiero spoiler being wider, and the studs being farther apart, it has to be mounted farther back due to the limited space between the glass in the hatch and hatch seal.

The back edge of the Fiero spoiler turn-down tips line up with the Firebird quarter panel ends, and the whale-tail section of the spoiler extends beyond the rear hatch. It actually fits the Firebird body lines quite well.

The filp side to your observation is...

It comes down to personal taste, and there is really no "correct" place for a modified spoiler to sit.

Strangely enough, I know of many Fiero owners who actually moved the spoiler on their Fiero back a few inches to get that look because they felt it was too forward from the factory.

Vern, mine is in the process, won't be done for another week or so.

Here is the topic from 2 years ago...

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...spoiler+silver

Even though the 2 pictures of side profile and rear are ok, and show how it lines up, I contacted JwattsJR yesterday requesting updated close up pictures of better quality.

Here is a few really good pictures of the spoiler itself...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...erior/gar3.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...erior/TOP1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...terior/LR2.jpg

It's almost 60" long, about 12.5" wide, and has a slight curve and lip.

The best part is it's a factory GM Pontiac spoiler. I'm not big on mods, but when I do them I like to use GM parts. I've owned 2 Fiero GTs, the rear spoiler is a quality piece.

One thing you need to be aware of if you decide to go this route. When shopping for a Fiero spoiler, make sure all 4 studs are intact and tight, includes both gaskets, 4 nuts, and most importantly make sure it's not warped (bowed).

Thanks for the advice and the pix. That is definitely one very nice looking spoiler!!!

Will definitely have to think about one of those, especially if my "new" aero spoiler gives me any trouble....

FieroGTA, I totally agree with you, but in the end it actually came down to money. I couldn't justify $200+ shipping + painting either. If I were to pay that much, I might as well spring for the Aerowing for a couple hundred more, you know? But it is based on personal preference like you said. But it really is a nicer spoiler than the stock unit, but it just came down to price at the end.

Not a TA but would like to do the TA hood and tails at some point, but with the sport appearance pkg- pretty close.

Not sure what you wanted to spend, but I have a complete rear hatch with the Firebird rear spoiler already attached to it.
Off an 1984 Trans Am.
We went the other way, took off the '91 Firebird hatch with the regular rear spoiler, and installed a '92 Formula hatch with the Trans Am spoiler.
No redrilling.
Of coarse, I collect lots of parts for these cars, so I am always playing around!
I would like to see some pics of your changeover though.
I guess I have a one of a kind car too!

I hear ya...

I had a hard time making a final decision myself.

Fiero Spoiler:

$120 shipped, $30 3rd brake light, $100 in paint supplies, $100 to friend to fill holes, painted for free.

$350 TOTAL

Aero Spoiler:

$450 shipped, $100 is paint supplies, friend paint it for free.

$550 TOTAL

I couldn't justify using the Fiero spoiler. All that extra work needing done to that hatch only to save $200. Not worth it to me, not on a car that is bone stock and mint condition. So I decided to use the correct spoiler.
