Switch to later style 3rd brake light...

Do I have to get a newer hatch to get rid of my '86 third brake light?

No. You could always get an older hatch.

Seriously, you probably will have to replace the hatch because if you notice, the screws holding on the assembly go through the glass. Take it out and you got 2 1/4" holes for rain to get in!

Yeah, if you want to get rid of that light and put on say the spoiler style CHMSL then you're best off finding a donor hatch. Mine's kinda rigged in there. It has a hatch from a firebird (thanks to the last owner and someone with bad brakes) so I had to kinda rig the spoiler. Also, the holes don't line up. The only ones that do are the ones on the ends of the center piece. You're best off getting a hatch with the spoiler on it to save on filling, then all you have to worry abbout is the end pieces. This will also mean that the wiring is already in there and the spots for the hole plugs are in the right place which is a plus. My wiring's just running through a hole from the old spoiler o it doesn't look as good as it could

I agree with getting a rear hatch from a wrecked car. It will have the spoiler attached already and the spring loaded contact piece on the underside. You will also need the contact pad that attaches to the plastic trim piece below and need to wire it in. Also make sure the spoiler matches with yours. If it is wider you will need to swap the side trim pieces as well.
