effect of gasoline on a paint job?...(horrible story inside)

so i was filling up the tank today before work and while i was checking the oil i hear something like a full blast garden hose. when i was done checking the oil i look back and see tons of gas spewing out of my car.

i'm about to talk to the manager about giving me money to re-paint my car but i wanted to know what exactly happens to the paint. it's already bubbly and all smeary looking. how much do you think i should ask for for the rear quarter to be re-painted...

Around here it's illegal to leave the hose unattended ( though most do anyway) Reason being is then they won't have to pay a dime for something happening like you describe. Were there any signs posted? Bummer anyway man.
Most factory paintjobs now are not affected by gasoline, unlike 15-20 years ago.

It's not the gas station's fault that you got gas all over your car.

Just wash your car and wax it. No harm no foul. If gas was that bad for paint, every car on the road would have stains under the gas cap from those inevitable few drops that always seem to get there.

how is it not the gas stations fault that the automatic stop didn't work? if i would have been standing next to it i would have been covered in gas...

Good luck with that...Never leave the pump unnetended.

I think they could fix the area in question but to paint the whole car yeah right.

Call your insurance company...

Too many variables come into play with those. Tampering, vandalism, worn out. etc. That's why they post signs DO NOT LEAVE PUMP UNATTENDED! Usually you can here (or know by the $ amount) when the tank is about full, then you pump slower to prevent splashback! Why trust something mechanical that gets subjected to the abuse they get everyday?

Maybe I'll sue the highway department. After all, it's their fault that my vehicles rust.

Dude, just wash and wax your car and forget about it. The gas isn't going to ruin a damned thing and you're going to look like a fool trying to get a paint job out of them because you spilled gas down the side of the car.

You will not, I repeat WILL NOT get anything from the manager unless he is nice. He has no legal obligation to paint your car because YOU left the hose unattended.

You are supposed to hold the hose in and the automatic filler is only so you dont have to squeeze the trigger. Never trust it to stop and stay in because sometimes the force of it clicking off is enough to push it out of the car... this happened when I was filling up my g/f's Wrangler.

Don't blame the gas station, wash your car ASAP, and pay for your own mistake or forget about it.

i hate oregon! it is ILLEGAL in this state to pumnp your own gas. so gas ALWAYS goes down the side of my car because the idiot grade school dropouts they pay 2$ to work these places do not understand the concept of a nice car since they all ride the bus or drive momys buick. i ALWAYS get out and watch them so they don't screw up my car. whenever i can get away with it i remove the nozzle myself.

good luck getting a dime out of them.

man i remember when i worked at the gas station so many people leave the car un-attended like myself cause ill normally bull**** with all my employees...but so many people's cars didnt cut off and gas went all over. I never understood why...but almost every time it was a girl or most likely an asian girl. Never understood if they were doing something different or what but it just was always girls. when i worked at a dealership and was filling a new car a hose broke up on the top where the hose goes into the pump and spewed gas all over me and the car....... and i left the window open, the interior got trashed but the paint was fine. The dealership couldnt get money from the station for that. the situation in your case sucks more because it was your car, mine sucked cause i got gas all over me and got yelled at by my boss for wrecking a 05 mustang gt interior! and not even my fault! im sure the gas station will find away to point the blame at you any way possible to save money.

I remember back when I had my '86 Grand Prix I was filling it up and propped the gas nozzle up on the license plate since the tank fill was behind the plate. I went to go wash the windows or something and the plate flipped back up and knocked the nozzle out. Got gas all over the back of the car...Didn't do anything to the paint, I dind't even really wash it off. I just felt more like an idiot since people were staring at me like WTF

I've only had gas spill out of the tank from over filling once, and I was attending it. For some reason the back flow stop didn't kick the pump off. Basically it goes like this...S**T happens I wouldn't even think about trying to get money from the station if it ruined my paint since it would pretty much be operator negligence. I know you were/still PO'd but such is life.
