How do I get to my gauges?
How do I get to my gauges?
I have a 91 Z28 and I couldn't figure out how to get to my gauges to replace the lights. I followed the instructions in the Haynes manual but it didn't help. I took off the dash and the speaker and a whole lot of random screws but I couldn't get to the gauges someone please help me.

Lemme see if I can help you out here (just did mine not too long ago) I'm not sure how far you got, so will go thru what I can remember...
1)Drop the knee pad - there's 2 screws behind that that goes to the trim piece.
2)The rest of the trim piece pops off, then you have to disconnect the wire plugs for the cig lighter, defrost, and fog lights. On your headlight switch, you have to pull the **** out. I think there's a release button for it but I couldn't find it so I just wiggled and jiggled it a few times and it popped out.
3)Remove the screws that hold the clear gage cover on (can't remember how many) There's a couple on top that are a little tight to get to, so heads-up there
4)Remove the gage cluster screws (about 4, I think) All the screws from the cover and cluster are the same, so if they get mixed up, don't sweat it.
5)Once you have all the gage cluster screws out, your cluster will come right out of the dash - no speedo to disconnect or anything. Your steering wheel tilt lever will probably get in the way of the trip odometer reset lever, but if you depress the od lever and hold it in as you're removing your cluster, it'll clear everything and come right out.
Once you get it out, the bulbs are a one-piece type bulb (integrated bulb/socket), but you can get bulbs and sockets separately, if you choose. This is handy if you want to change your bulbs to a colored bulb. (pretty cool - mine are red now) The bulbs come right out of the back of the gage cluster with a 1/4 turn - piece of cake...
Good luck!

RSV6 - same way as mentioned above. Yes, the knee pad is the "panel" under the dash. Gotta pop out those "plugs" and drop it down so you can get to the screws that hold the cluster trim piece in at the bottom.
