THESE WHITE FACE GAUGE OVERLAYS ROCK!!!
I just had to show everybody these pics of my Macewen white face gauge overlays that I put in today:
I this was the best couple of hours I've spent on my car yet. I installed some green bulbs, too...it looks totally awesome at night! My hat's off to Macewen...he's got a great product and it was really easy to install. I bought them on the most recent group purchase. Has anybody else from the GP put theirs in yet?

I just put mine in today also (Not from the GP though) It kicks serious a$$. And.. umm.. damn you for only taking a couple of hours
lol.. it took me at least 12 hours, and a TON of grunt work. Blah! I gotta say, it looks AWESOME though. At night, the blue xenon bulbs are tight!

You can get the bulbs from Macewen, too. I think they were like $6-$7 a pair, or something like that. I needed 4 for my 1992 Camaro, but different years require different numbers of bulbs. They look awesome...they're not like just regular bulbs...they have this wicked glow at night.
As for installation time, I guess it was more like 2-1/2 hours (ha). The bulbs were a little confusing at first...you have to make sure you pick the right ones. Once you pull them out, you have to break the solders on the old bulbs before you can pull them out of the plastic holders. Then, you just put the new bulbs in and wrap the leads around the sides of the contacts. I didn't solder them, but they seem to be connecting OK. The only other hard part was getting the blasted knee bolster trim thingy back in. It didnt' want to line up properly. Besides that, it was really easy. Anybody else got theirs in?

I didn't want to bother with taking the needles off to paint them red...I thought they looked fine stock. Besides, I didn't want to screw up the gauges.
I haven't taken any night pics yet, but that's a pretty good idea. I'll try to post some soon...meanwhile, there's a night pic of an IROC instrument cluster on macewen's web site at http://macewen.net.

I painted my needles red.. didn't need to take the needles off to paint them. Actually.. I used a sharpie marker. Worked pretty well.
The picture on MacEwan's site of the xenon bulbs at night, DO NOT do it justice at all. It looks way better at night than that picture can ever show.

I forgot to tell you I used the prismacolor red to color my needles. It only took me a couple of hrs to do it. Not bad at all.

Well, somebody asked for night pics of the gauges, so here they are:
For those that painted their needles, how did you do it without taking them off? I noticed that they are colored orange on BOTH sides of the needle...do you color only one side? Did it come out OK?

I have a 91 Z with macewen gauges. It is NOT true that the needles are colored on both sides... although it looks that way. They are only colored on the back. I changed mine from the original yellow to red and finally settled on silver. Here's how to do it WITHOUT removing the needles:
-Be sure hands are clean to avoid finger prints on the gauges.
-Protect gauges with thin cardboard or equivalent between the gauge & needle.
-Sand the back of the needle with 100 grit or higher to remove all yellow from it. You will have to develop your own technique.
*Do not sand the top of the needle; trust me, it is not colored. It will leave a frosty aftermath and will leave the needles looking dull. Also, dont try to remove the needle.
-When all yellow is removed decide on a color, and paint the bottom of the needle. A regular model paint brush will suffice. Dont worry about overpainting the sides of the needle. It wont be noticed.
Thats it! I opted to also paint the raised part of the black circle... sorry, no pix. But it looks a ton better w/o the yellow, and I have recived nothing but raving compliments. It looks the same at night as the pic you posted. I also have green bulbs. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, Greg...I guess the needles fooled me about the two-sided thing. Man, are there many 3rd gen Camaros where you live? I hadn't noticed anybody else on this site from Germany. I'm still sorta new, though.
By the way, to everyone, a word to the wise: soiter your contact connections if you decide to swap your lights out for Macewen's krypton bulbs. I've got to go back and do it because I didn't have a soiter gun handy at the time. One of my bulbs kinda goes on, goes off, etc. You actually have to break the old bulbs out of the plastic holders to swap them out with the new ones.
Also, don't hesitate to do all this stuff yourself. If I could do it, anybody could do it. I'm not exactly what I would call "mechanically inclined"

One more thing...if you have a manual tranny and you want to put in the white face overlays, go ahead and take out the stupid SHIFT light that constantly tells you to shift up to the next gear. I'm gonna take mine out when I get around to soldering the connections. I don't know if that bothers anyone else, but it annoys the heck out of me!

I take that back; the color of the needles when painted silver appear green when lit at night, not yellow. It matches very well.

This might sound stupid to those that know what their doin, but if you just sand the needles and take off the yellow, why couldn't you just keep it like that? Im not mechanically inclined at ALL im just a "kid" with his first car hehe. seems to me that if you just sand off the paint at night the needle will "glow" the bulb color, and that would be the best effect, in my opinion...

I am still waiting for my Guages to come in the mail. However, im a "special" case.. I didnt want the white faced.. i opted to wait longer for the 91 Silver Faced Guages

Hey guys, how did you get to your needles and so forth anyways?? I wanted to change the bulbs in the back a long time ago but I could get to it. Do I have to take the dash off and all that stuff to get behind the glass to change the white faces??
whoops, typo, couldn't get into it. I was reading the handout they had on there page but couldnt follow to well. I guess I'll have to print it and do it myself. Also, on the bulbs... someone said that the kryton bulbs //DO// fade. Anyone have facts on that they dont??
First, if you took the yellow off without putting another color on, it would be clear, which in my opinion looks like crap in sunlight. Like I said before, my needles glow green with the silver paint.
sixty, my suggestion is to get a Haynes manual. It will suggest to drop the steering colomn, wich is not neccessary, but will make the job a whole lot easier...

sixty, my suggestion is to get a Haynes manual. It will suggest to drop the steering colomn, wich is not neccessary, but will make the job a whole lot easier...
