Armor all on dash

Just armor alled the dash, thought this was a cool pic. It is a little blurry but I had to take the pic myself while driving 100mph!

nice looking but only for a matter of time. it looks shiny and wet but that is because armor all contains silicon which in time draws moisture out of the dash and will dry it up and cause cracks. for me especially in the body shop world armor all is a no no. it not just armor all i try to never use any products that contain silicon on any of my vehicles or around my shop. my worst fear is not cracked dashes but fish eyes in my paint.

Agreed, you shouldn't use Armor-All on vinyl or leather. In fact, the only place I've found a use for it is to spray my wheel wells.

I was actually on my way home from work at 4 am, there were no other cars around and it was on a six lane expressway. I was not even sure how the pic would come out because I never took my eyes off the road. I have been using Armor All on my interior for 24 years (7 on my GTA), and I haven't had a dash crack yet. But, I definitely would not use it on my leather.

So, was the point of this picture to show us how nicely the armor all cleaned your dash, or was it to show us that you took a picture at 100 miles per hour?

If you wanted to show us the results of your dash...Couldn't you have taken the 30 seconds during the day to snap a focused, well-lit picture?

alot of it also has to do with how much sun it sees. silicon in armor all with always cause it to dry out somewhat faster than naturally and so will the sun. if you put them together for an extended amount of time or very ofter it will be more accelerated. for those that say they have done it and it hasnt cracked yet is it worth the risk when you can just use something that doesnt contain silicon and get the same results. when i was 16 and first bought my car my dash was 100% perfect. so i cleaned it all up and armor all it, after a week my car broke and sat in my garage for three years under a cover without being tampered with. i took the cover off and got into the car after 3 years of neglect and i now have 2 huge cracks throughout my dash and the whole thing looks just dry as paper. the only thing i can think of is the armor all from what i know about it and the heat of my garage in the summer with sun hitting it and the cover over it.

I use the 3M vinyl and leather cleaner/protectant. Works great and has carnauba wax in it.

Where do you get the 3M stuff? I used that stuff years ago and loved it, but have not been able to find it in a long time. It even gives the car that new car smell. I have not looked to hard. I have tried to find it on the 3M website and could not find it, and a couple of local places.

The only cleaner I could find on their web site was Upholstery/carpet Cleaner. I did do a Google search and found it on 3M's site ( 3M Home and Leisure : Scotchgardâ„¢ Vinyl & Leather Protectant with Cleaner 03544, Spring Rain Scent, 8.5 oz., 6/case ). Would you use this stuff on just the dashpad or the entire dash (plastic parts)?

Actually, Armor All changed their formulation a few years ago because it used to do what you describe. AA saw the writing on the wall and simply had to change it, but they are having a hard time overcoming that history. My understanding is that it is now a water based dressing, but don't quote me on that. In any event, there are "good" and "bad" silicones used in various car care products, but as you said, you don't want products containing silicones around a body shop at all. Keep them far, far away!! I know Meguiar's makes a variety of products, from waxes to polishes and paint cleaners to dressings that they label as body shape safe. Other Meg's products are not though.

I LIKE TO USE SLIPPERY COATINGS MYSELF

Armorall contains silicone not silicon.
(not picking on spelling, the inclusion of the ‘e’ completely changes the formula)
Happy Racing!

If people drove any slower
they’d be going backwards.

The stuff I used in the past was a gel like the second one shown by compuwiz. This is the one I found by searching "3M vinyl".

Re: Armor all on dash

I used to Armour-all my dash until I found that it seemed to attract more dirt more quickly. The Camaro never saw Armour-all after I bought it...I cleaned the dash with water, dried it, and applied Turtle Wax's Ice Total Interior Care. It's a substance (I have no idea whats in it..) thats supposed to be good for dashes, leather, carpet cleaning, etc. I've not noticed any ill effects, and have actually received several comments about it at shows, since it doesn't leave that slimy greasy look that Armour-All seemed to leave.

+4 on the 303 protectant. I use it on boats as well, which see a lot more weather exposure and it works great and lasts months.

my aunt works for a place (cant remember the name) but anyway they use this stuff called visco which is like cleaer on steroids, they buy it form some place overseas, and my aunt usually takes a 5 gallon bucket fills it up and gives it to my grandpa. and he give me and my dad bottles filled with it. we usually just use windex bottles or something. they dont sell it though. this is what ive been told i dont know if its true so if somebody finds it on the internet dont call me a liar lol.

I've used Armor All for years with no bad affects. I 1st use the AA cleaning wipes and then when the wipe is dry spray it lightly with AA and then wipe any excess off with a polishing rag. Leaves the interior shiny but not oily.
