Try Greased Lightning "Orange Glow". You can get it cheap in the automotive section of Wal Mart.

Do this on a dry, sunny day.

Spray it right onto the carpet, and then hit the carpet with a little bit of water. Scrub it.

After you scrub for a while, get a hose and a shop vac, and spray it with the hose, then quickly vac it up. This will lift the dirt and pull it out pretty effectively. This is probably about the best you can do other than a steamer.

Do that a few times until you're sucking up clean water, then leave your doors open with a box fan blowing on the floor for a couple hours. This will make sure the carpet and the padding will dry out properly.

Also try the .99 cent WAL-Mart brand spray foam carpet cleaner, it comes in a pink can.
For those stubborn stains I like to use Bissell carpet cleaner, it's the liquid type made for steam cleaners (red bottle), this stuff will remove just about anything.....

lol, I have also used Tide w/bleach (with the carpet out).
Just dust the carpet with the Tide and lightly spray with water, let it sit a while and give it a good dose of water to rinse.
