I'm Back! Come See my New Car!!!!

Well guys, i finally found something to replace my beloved and dearly departed white heritage...another heritage. This one is a Black/Red Z28. Its got the 305TPI auto, black interior, and t-tops. It also only has 29k miles. I think the mileage is actually the worst thing about it...

Obviously because the mileage is that low, it was driven infrequently; from what i gather it sat for 4 years up until this past june. Due to that sitting, ALOT of stuff needs replacing/fixing and its really frustrating. On the long (900 mile) ride home with it, it started surging and it blew a bunch of coolant out of it. We left it at a local chevy dealer in indiana to be fixed...That was 2 weeks ago. A new fuel pump, fuel filter, radiator, hoses, belt, air filter, and 4 BFG tires later...its fairly roadworthy and made it home with ALMOST no concerns. Biggest problem at the moment is that it seems to heat up VERY VERY VERY fast and get very hot (thats another subject, which if you can help me, go to the topics i posted in the cooling and general engine forums). It also seems to idle rough on start up (drops down to like 600RPM then shoots up to about 1400 real quick and then just idles rough or lopey. Hard to explain.

Anyway, here are some prelimiary shots of it...i'll get better ones tommorow or sunday...as i just got back from a 500 mile ride less than an hour ago and the lighting isnt great and im kinda worn out...

Oh, and in tribute to my white heritage, its sporting the exact same license plate!

man that car's sexy it's SUPER clean, and it should be for having that many miles

you should have someone photochop a sig for you with both cars in it to tribute to the heritage cars you love so much

Very nice ride you have !!!!

Flush the entire cooling system thoroughly
asap. That may be the cause of your rapid heat up.

Yeah, maybe not a bad idea to replace the thermostat, flush the system.

Also, I dont know where it was stored, but my car had sat outside, and it got a ton of leaves (no idea how) between the A/C condensor and the radiator, and it was heating up crazy hot. I didnt find out the reason until the radiator blew a pin sized hole and I replaced it.

Food for thought.

On the other hand... Man I do like the black with red stripes, alot more than your white one

Like the guy said above... where the heck do you find these!!!

Radiator was changed and all new coolant was put in at the dealer. I'm not sure...from what ive been told in just the past hour on this site, TPI cars run alittle bit hotter than TBI cars to begin with. I just want to know what is 'normal' for a TPI car (Im gona change the theromstat and fan switch anyway...but if the car is running normal then were good, but if not, they i may have to have something else done). So please, anyone with a TPI car, tell me how fast it heats up from like 160*-220*, and how much hotter it gets than 220* (from what your gauge says).

And as far as where do i find em...The white one i was able to find practically in my own backyard. It got traded in on a new ford and ended up on a ford dealers front line. My parents had actually bought 2 new cars from that dealer before so we knew alot of people there and went there and bought it the first time we saw it. As for this black one, we saw it on ebay and figured the reserve would be through the roof. We called the guy and asked him how much to take it off ebay, and it wasnt that much at all...so we jumped on it. Unfortunately between plane tickets out to illinois, 2 nights total at a hotel (because we had to go back to indiana to pick it from the dealer), a car rental for 2 weeks, and the stuff done at the dealer, we ended up paying a real pretty penny for it. Ill have more and better pics up tommorow after i wax and detail it...

Wow! That thing is gorgeous. I think you will like the Z alot better than your old one. I sold a nice Z-28 last year and have regretted it ever since. The RS I have now doesn't even compare.

The Stock Prom does let the car get pretty hot. I cant remember the exact number, but really high before the second fan turns on like well over 220 deg. That is the reason most people get custom proms to turn the fans on sooner etc...

My old 305 after I cleaned out all the garbage in front of the radiator stayed at or below the 220 mark.

Dual fans.. ECM controlled fan.. 220-222°... fan switch for secondary 238°
Accuracy of the gauge ±40°

Clean looking ride btw... nice.

Ok.
Well, first of all, that is a SUPERB car. Nice find.

Now, your idle porblem is "most likely" a vacum leak. Check all of your vacum hoses especially ones that go to the MAF/MAP and the EGR valve. Very easy to mess up when messing with distributor or coil.

For the cooling part, what I did was T into the green with white stripe wire on the first fan relay, and I grounded it to the chasis. This keeps the driver side fan on all the time. This alone, keeps my temps at about 190 almost all the time.
You can set it up to switches so you can turn both of the fans on as well. This way you control your fans without spending more then 5 bucks.
In order to get the second fan going you have to T into the gray wire and ground it.

I hate when these cars run over 220, and even 190. So, I am just trying to help.

Nice car, and take care of her!

Well I have to agree with everyone on here that you ended up with a great deal even if you had to go 500 miles away to pick it up and bring it back. Definately a fun drive home I bet. Don't be too worried about heating up between 160 - 220, especially with this summer's heat. If it gets up much past 220 you might have some concern if your fans aren't bringing the temp back down periodically. Enjoy the new car and get those pictures up as soon as you can.

Heres a bunch of pictures after i detailed it earlier today. I actually took it for a nice cruise and it ran great, smooth, and handled excellently. Check engine light came on (code 45-running too rich, which is what the dealer supposedly fixed...even though the surging is gone, theres still a problem)..so im pissed about that. Also it still runs hot if your doing alot of stopping and/or slow driving. The fan on the drivers side works, and the temperature gauge is kinda wacked (it like clicks back and forth) so for all i know the temperatures could be normal...even though i wanna get a lower fan switch (what temp fan switch should i get?) and a 180* t-stat anyway.

And me after taking my first real cruise with it...

Looks great! Low miles is cool but I can understand what you're saying about the car sitting for a long time. This really isn't good for the car. The tires probably got ruined from sitting in one spot, some of the fluids probably needed to be flushed and re-added. Would also be supprised if it didnt need a new battery/alternator. But none the less, good find, and after all that stuff gets taken care of you'll have a super clean low mile car.

For the cooling problems I would first check both fan motors to make sure they are working (spin them by hand and feel for resistance, or wait for em to turn on and see whats up), then I would install a new 180 degree thermostat with a single 1/8th inch hole drilled into one side, then I would install a 180 degree fan switch. Even with the stock PROM this should keep temps at a constant 180 degrees, does it for me in hot Hawaii stop and go traffic.

Not too sure about the code 45, but I would start by replacing the 02 sensor since its fairly cheap and easy, and has alot to do with the A/F ratio.

Yea when we bought it it had the original tires which had alot of tread left but were dryrotted so we put some BFG KDWS's on. The code 45 doesnt effect the drivability now that the surging is gone, so im not really in a rush to get that done...first ill get the front brakes and cooling stuff done.

A-mack beautiful car bro...!

Im glad she made it back safely...lol sorry you had so many troubles along the way, owning a low low mileage car that hasnt been driven in years is pretty bad too as youve seen.

When i got my car i too was worried about my cooling problem. It would rise so fast in traffic get close to overheating then cool down some, also lots of gurgling noises from the overflow tank. Thats just how they made these cars from the factory. Ive heard its for lower emission purposes...but who knows why GM did that or a lot of stuff for that matter lol.

180* stat
180* fan switch
and its fixed almost guaranteed. It was for me and i have been driving my car over 2 years and not had a single issue with the cooling system cept when my radiator blew up(120k and 15 years on a stock radiator its time). My car maybe touches 210-220* after an hour of 90* traffic...

What CrazyHawaiian said is prolly the best advise to do. I would also change the O2 sensor as they only cost like $17...

I just got home from being in New York all week. I should have PM'ed ya, that way i coulda stoped by on the drive through PA to see the car.

I gotta see this car so i hope your still plannin on going to the F-Body Nationals as i was really thinking about going...

congrats man!

Have a part# for the 180deg fan switch?

I thought the fan switch just passed the temp to the ECM and it was controlled from there?

For the primary fan it does but the secondary fan is controlled by a temp switch in the passenger side head as well as a switch in the high side of the ac switch. The computer has no control over the secondary fan what so ever.

My car has the single fan, would there be any problem grounding it like xlwhellraiser suggested to have it run whenever the car is on? I don't like my car running as hot as it does before the fan kicks on and cools it back down.

looking at this black car with red stripes down the middle makes me wonder what it would look like with a red leather interior. did they make black heritage camaro's with red interiors? im not saying it would look better, it just makes me think

Red interiors are hideous IMO. I don't know if leather was an option or not, but you could get a red interior with black exterior.

Sweet Z-28 I like it even better than your old RS, and that one was really nice too. You'll be much happier with this though since its TPI
