New Look

I recently got a set of 17" Billet Specialties GTX65's for my '87 IROC Z. Here's how it turned out...

Front: 17x8 4.5 BS with 245-45-17 Nitto 555's
Rear: 17x9.5 5.5 BS with 275-40-17 Nitto 555's

The rear had very short springs with the old big/little setup. It was on the bump stops constantly. I replaced those with Eibach Sportlines.

I purchased the wheels slightly used from another TGO member. These wheels can be purchased new for significantly less than $550 at places like Newstalgia Wheel.

you could get them with a soft lip, but it'd cost more

Looks nice man, love the big block converions. I bet that is an interesting car on the street... no brake assist, wipers, power steering. Stripped down to the bare esentials . I bet it is a lot more fun parking that thing now that you have those nice fat tires on the front, and no p/s!!

- Hey where did you get the chrome strut caps?
Nice car!

im glad you said what size the drag rads are because i tried my dads from his 77ta with a 275 60 15 with 15x8 wheel and a 4.5 in bs , and they just hit the fender lip , id need to roll the fender to make em fit , i have sportlines so its real low, but i wonder how they would fit with the 5.5 inch bs .

Nice car!
It's very bare bones. No radio, heater, etc - but all the faceplates were retained to look stock. Everything that could be lightened has been. It works great on the street. I changed the brake pedal ratio to approx. 6:1 and it has great pedal feel. I don't drive it in the rain, but it's got a good coat of Rain-X just in case. I was nervous about the bigger tires with the manual steering box, but it's not any worse than the skinnies. Parallel parking can be a challenge, but other than that it's not a problem. The biggest issue on the street is ground clearance - speed bumps are a no-no.

The chrome strut caps were on the car when I purchased it, so I'm not sure who makes them.

With in 5.5 BS 15x8, it gets tight on inner fender well. The tire will hit the bump stop when you jack the rear by the frame and let the axle hang. Your axle will need to be near-perfectly centered to avoid hitting the fender lips. In the pics above with the 15's, my car sits about 1 - 1.5 inches LOWER than with the Sportlines. That's a 27.7 inch tire and the top of the fender well is only 26.5 inches from the ground.

btw are you going on the tour next year? i think im going to skip next year with it being so far away. but we have family in kalamazoo where it is going through so idk if we will or not.

Hey, I remember talking with you. Thanks for the compliments. I haven't decided about next year yet. If I do go, I might take a quieter, more comfortable car so that my dad can go with me. I loved 'roughing it' this past year in my bare bones IROC though.
