brake caliper paint

I want to paint my brake calipers and was wondering if powder coating or just using por 15 would do?

i was talking to my mechanic at one point when i had my corvette brakes installed and he had said that if i do paint my calipers i should use caliper paint or else the brake fluid could boil. didnt sound good to me so i would probably stay away from por15.

POR-15 would work, but why not just buy a caliper paint kit? You an get the the Dupli-Color kit from Wal-mart for $15.

I was just looking at my options and wanted to see if there was a better option. I have some gold brake caliper paint that I have never used from my last car that will come into use I guess.

I used the duplicolor kit and it worked great!

....I've cleaned them aggresively with brake cleaner about 3 times over the years and still no problems.

Huh???? How on earth would painting the calipers cause the brake fluid to boil? I think your mechanic has been drinking brake fluid or something, that's just crazy.

I've painted a few sets of brake calipers, and only once did I use a special caliper paint kit. The other times I used just basic spray paint. Sure, the calipers get hot, but they don't get THAT hot. I know guys who have sprayed their calipers using Krylon and they autocross these cars a couple dozen times a year, road race them, etc so the brakes get about as hot as you'll ever see a set of calipers get. Even after three or four seasons of brutalizing them the paint is still fine.

But, it is absolutely critical that you clean the calipers as completely as possible. Your basic brake cleaner is amazingly potent stuff......use a lot of it and a wire brush if need be to really clean the calipers before you spray. Oh, and what I've done is to spray the paint into a paper cup and then brush it on using one of the cheap foam paint "brushes" you can pick up at the hardware store for less than a buck. Apply a few thin coats and you won't have any brush strokes, drips, or runs.

I'm a mechanic myself, and can't say I ever heard of brake fluid boiling from calipers being painted. The only thing I can think of would be if you put on such a thick coat of gloss black, and used the shat outta your brakes non stop, MAYBE you will have some brake fluid boil in the piston area, but even thats rediculous to me. Paint em all you want, they aint gonna boil. lol.

duplicolor kit from advanced auto or whatever works. I liked it a lot and nothing i do except drop the caliper will damage the paint. Holds up to brake clean and anything else.

Painting brake calipers

What about the surface rust on your used rotors or will the paint only stick to brand new ones? Sand blast the rust off or use Evapo-Rust?
I've installed brand new rear rotors on the new 9 bolt and they look horrible after just a few weeks.
Suggestions?

When I painted the calipers on a car of mine other than the Camaro I decided to clean up the nasty looking surface rusted rotor hats and outer edges of the rotors at the same time. I did the same brake cleaner spray as on the calipers and then gently hit them with a wire brush. Again I sprayed the paint into a paper cup and then brushed it on the offending areas. You don't need to worry about masking the rotors braking surface - I got a few small drips on them and the first time I applied the brakes the small amount of paint was gone. This really cleaned up the look of the brakes in general.

I used Por15 (had some sitting around) and it's good so far. I think I painted them about three months ago...
