Painting Door Locks/Handles
The paint on the door locks of my 87 have worn off pretty much completely and and I was wondering what type of paint, prep, etc. I would need to do to get them back to the factory black finish. Also, how about the door handles? Same process?

well you can tape everything off and redo them right on your car. Gey some masking tape and tape around everything. Then just tape news paper or something around the whole area, to avoid over spray. Then just take a scotch bright pad and ruff them up. Wipe them off good and just take a spray can and repaint them.

it's easy to take the door handles out...just 2 bolts. Just use satin black or whatever color you want. As for the lock, that comes out easy too....but I bought these covers called "smooth locks". They are covers that go over your locks that hide them totally. http://collect.myspace.com/reloc.cfm?c=6&id=13952926
But, if you use your locks.,...then you can't use the smooth locks. I put them on my car because I don't use the locks, having keyless entry...

You could actually replace the door handles all together for about $20 and the door lock cylinder caps are available from GM. I just replaced both of mine and the difference in overall appearance is amazing. You would need to remove the door panel and 2 bolts for the handles and one retainer for the lock cylinder.
There are plenty of companies on ebay that sell new door handles. Just do a search.

Oh ya i agree, definently just get new replacements. They work ten times better and will look a lot better then old painted handles. Unless professionally done...but like said were only talking $20-30 for new freshly coated door handles.
Ill be buying new 4th gen handles and having them powerdercoated white to match my car and im not sure what i want to do with the key locks yet.
