Engine bay painting...
Engine bay painting...
I'm having the whole car done black (van nuys maui blue has gone to hell completely), and I was thinking of doing the bay white, just to make the enging more visible. Do I have to yank the engine for that, or can it be done in car? If I had it done proffessionally, how much do you think they'd charge? Thanks ahead.

Personally I wouldn't paint the engine bay white but that is my opinoin. It would give you the best results if you removed the enigine. This way you can get into all of the small spaces when cleaning and won't get any overspray on the block. While you have it out you can clean it up and paint it too. I don't think a shop would charge that much for it but if you do more prep work and just have them spray it then it will be a lot less.

Trust me on this, you do not want a white engine bay unless you are addicted to cleaning and de-greasing. I have a white IROC and I am always cleaning under the hood.
I was thinking about going to flat black next time I had the motor out.

Interesting, getting ready myself to paint my engine compartment and just for the hell of it I asked the Body shop that will be doing my car later how much they would charge for painting the engine compartment. $450 was the quote, that's me taking EVERYTHING OUT, EVERYTHING OUT!! then towing the car up to the shop and letting them do the painting. So I opted for the POR-15 engine painting kit. I suck when it comes to spray paint. So I figure I will use POR and brush it.

It's your lucky day,,, i can give you a visual
You'll have to look past the wheels,,, among other the nastiness
Taking everything out does help alot,, but can be done leaving the engine in (everything else still has to go though)

Now THAT is what I'm talking about!!!! You look at this black beast, rolling thunder, open the hood and BAM! There's the engine, bright as day, here to say hello. Wonderful!!! Thanks deadbird! Any specific tips? It sounds like you did it yourself?

I'm sorry I have to voice my opinion, but... that looks like a black refrigerator. I think that a car should have the same color engine bay as the exterior, but thats just my thoughts. EVERYONE TO THEIR OWN.

The biggest thing with changing underhood color is how long you can have downtime on your car. It's no easy task removing all the crap from under the hood. The best start is to have a clean engine bay which means degreasing. I've always used Power Clean to do the dirty work mixeed with a few other degreasers and a pressure wash. I didn't have alot of cleaning to do this time around since I already changed it from red to black a few years ago and I hate dirty engine bays (especially if you have to do work on the car). Getting the wiring out of the way isn't very easy either since it's everywhere. I ended up hiding all my wires & moving things around just because I hate seeing wires too. Certain things that you don't want to unhook (like a/c lines, you can wrap alum foil around or saran wrap,,, it's alot easier than trying to paper them off. Remove everything you can and clean remaining grease with a strong thinner (like acetone or laquer). Scuff down the old paint with a scotch brite pad and clean with a wax/grease prep,, apply some Bulldog adhesion promoter (just for giggles) and paint the color of your choice,,, I used Plastikote spray paint on mine since at the time when I did it I didn't have an air compressor. If you whan just white white,, use some krylon,,, it comes out to a pretty nice finish if you paint it ight.
That's pretty close to how I did mine,, while there are lots better ways & paints to paint your engine bay,,, for $10 worth of color matched spray bombs,, it was more worth it at the time for me to go the route I did. Someday I might redo it the 'correct' way

I went with the retro look. I used satin black like the older GM muscle cars used.

I too believe that the engine bay should be the same color as the car, look here at mine.
