DIY Parking light blackouts - no painting! - pics w/in...

Okay I had this idea for a long time, and I finally said 'hell with it' and tried it. man im glad! It looks sweet! My idea was to take some really dark window tint film and stick it on the parking lights. Heres what I did.

1.) remove the parking lights.

2.) Clean them with something like a toothbrush. They must be really clean to work.

3.) Heres the hardest part. Take an X-Acto knife and go across the lns and shave off the numbers. It doesn't matter that much if you scratch the lens, it won't show thru the tint.

4.) Cut out a piece of film for the lens with the backing still on, but make it about 1/8" bigger, so you can fold it down to cover the sides. This is kind of hard to explain, but to make it look good, you need to black out the sides of the lens. When you apply the film, start at one end of the lens, and work your finger o nthe film down the length of the lens, so you don't get any bubbles.

I had to use 2 layers of limo tint film to get it as dark as I wanted. They still shine great at night, but look awesome in the day.
Heres the pics, sorry they are really crappy, and my car was filthy. I just wiped the dirt off the lenses real quick cust it was like 15 minutes till dark and i didn't have time to wash it. Note that on the back quarter piecs, it would look alot better if my paint wasn't flaking off the metal trim piece.

I had the same idea. Do you still have lights in them or is it impossiable to shine through?

Be careful w/ this method, I did it too then the front side markers had the tint fall of, and the rears started to seperate... I ended up painting them in the end...

The adhesive in tinting was not designed to stick to anything other than glass! At least not for an extended period of time! It may stick now but like the other guy said, it won't last!

If done the way he says with cleaning thoroghly, it will last!
While I was back in the ol' country, nobody had blackouts. This was THE way to do the tinting over there for taillights as well.
Later on came the tint spray, but you had to be real good to get that nice (at least with the spray that was then, this is some years back). It was a pita to get the taillights "shaved" so they would be good looking with the film, but it worked.
Now there was another way (hehehehe) that some people, who didn't have the patience to do all this, used. It was black stockings!!!
Yep, that's right, some took a pair of lady's stockings and stretched it over the light and tied it on the back side. The thing is, you have to get real real close to realize what it is - and it looks smooth when you don't know what it is. This is also a GREAT method to use if you want to see what tinting will look like on your car. Inexpensive and takes a few minutes! Now, there is todays hot tip!

Sorry, got carried away here...

They have been on for about 7 months now. They have stood up to 90+ degree texas heat and humidity, as well as a quarter inch of ice on them back in december. They are not peeling or bubbling anywhere, either. It doesnt really matter what the glue was designed to stick to, as long as its a clean surface, the glue will seal. And yes, the lights shine fine through them.
