Funny, you talk a good talk about the boy doing a great job because it was all the money he had and then there is this quote.
So in a nutshell, he did not do it to make his car better because it was what he had, he simply halfassed it. Too bad you made an essay supporting a thesis that he found untrue.

Camaro-please?
I think you not catching my drift i will have money over the summer, but i was inspired to paint my car over spring break....A 16 year old dropping 2000 grtand on a paint job is really really really wrong....there are more important things (college)

A statement made by yours truly supporting his fact, prior to his correction

Re: Final Results From Extremely Poor Man's Paint Job
Looks good, except for the hood there. What happened? Forget to sand something underneath or was it a paint run?
You can tell it's not a true automotive paint, it doesn't have the shine. Not sure if you can help it out by cutting and buffing it or wet sanding it, then adding clearcoat? (spray bomb clearcoat).
I think the only visible "oopsie" was on the hood. Since you've painted it in this method, you can go back and re-do just that one part right? You might want to consider that, since the hood is one of the most visible parts of the car.
Looks sharp, 10' away is good enough.

Use rubbing compound and rub the **** out of it.
Re: Final Results From Extremely Poor Man's Paint Job
I was reading this thread and did a bit of digging. If I were to think of doing this, which Rustoleum paint might be best suited to UV and weather abuse... They have a Marine Coating product that might be a decent option:

Think about it...

a paint job that was applied with a roller over bondo is in NO WAY AT ALL a "nice" finished product.

Had he spent say 500 dollars, then yeah, not so good.
Its all about perspective here.

Leave the kid alone.I have respect for him for painting his own car. The way I see it is live and learn. you must do it before you know how to do it right. you don't start off in math knowing the answers, you need to learn and make mistakes before you know how to do it right. I spent all day using rubbing compound and polishing my car. If I had bad paint on my car, I would do the same thing.

EVERYONE IS ENTITLED 2 THEIR OWN OPINION. ITS SHABBY BUT WAY BETTER THAN B4. REMINDS ME I NEED TO REPAINT MY CAR WHEN I GET SOME FREE TIME. THE PICK THAT IS POSTED IS OLLLLD AND THE PAINT LOOKS RED INSTEAD OF BRANDY WINE(MAROON). SITS IN THE SUN 2 MUCH, BUT I HAVE BEEN REDOING EVERYTHING STARTED FROM THE MOTOR OUT!

Re: Final Results From Extremely Poor Man's Paint Job
It's a good job that he did. Nothing wrong with it at all. At least he had the motivation and the willing to step out of the comfort zone and do the thing himself rather than just having more money than brains to throw at it like some of the posters on this thread seem to have. You know it is a "good" paint job when you spend over 5 thousand dollars and just have someone else do it for you? Nah. It's a good paint job when you do it yourself, get some education in during the process, and are happy with the results. Kudos to you, my young friend, and don't let these money mizers bring you down.
Re: Final Results From Extremely Poor Man's Paint Job
Camaro-please? did you ever get some outside pix of it, curious to see how it looks. It looked like it came out of a grave before you painted it...
-I just got an Earl Schieb paint job, not bad, but I plan on "flash" (meaning Im not going to spend a lot of time, just 2k grit and polish) wet sanding it and when its done it will look like a 2k paint job (Ive done it before, big diff). I mean, its only 3 weeks old and already have rock dings etc.
No point in spending a lot of money on paint unless its a show car or weekend cruiser or if you just plain got the $$cash$$ ya know.

Yea i just edited the first post i had because i thought it would be more convienent.
Anyway...i thought this was the most productive spring break ive ever had,
Theres a couple things i would redo in a heartbeat....i would sand that bondo sown like none other then i would during the wet sanding move up the scale...i was cheap and only bought the 400 wet grit because thats all they had at ace. But yea i definetly agree that it was a great lerning experience, i feel that if i do the whole bondo/paint thing again it will turn out alot better.....you just need some confidence.

Re: Final Results From Extremely Poor Man's Paint Job
It looks better than it did, but in all honesty it looked like total crap before so that isn't saying much. Props for the attempt though.
BTW, I painted the front fenders and fascia on my RS with a couple of rattle cans and it turned out really good for a 'temporary' paint job until I get it painted for real. And I used Dollar Store paint so the whole thing cost me like $5! I did the headlight pockets too.

Re: Final Results From Extremely Poor Man's Paint Job
FYI, The current Hot Rod magazine has an article on this very subject. They paint a 63 Falcon. Of course, in pictures it looks pretty good, but I'd have to be dirt poor to even think about doing it to any car I owned.
Hate to see this thread come up again. Even sadder to see Hot Rod filling pages with it.
The times, how they have changed!
