Buying an iroc, Maybe...
ok well heres the deal , i went looking at a red camaro the other day , was a total PoS
a guy drove up and asked if i was buying it , i said i was looking at it and looking for one , he then told me he had a 350 tpi iroc , he gave me his number and i went on my day.
a few days later i called him up and asked to come look at it , he said sure and i walked over to his house (he lives less then a block away go fig)
well it was an 88 iroc VIN matched up , was TPI 350 with a stage 3 hyper chip i was told . now he said he bought it from a dealership that had it on there lot for 10 years!. the odometer said like 39k which me and him both did not believe is the true reading. well he showed me the good and the bad , the good it looked decent from the outside , and once we jumped it she started right up. now here is were things kind bad , he said when he bought it and 4th gear went , he brought it to the dealer and said you need to fix this cause its under warranty (which he does not have prof to show) but says it was done , shorty after that he said he had a fire under the hood , he said that oil leaked from the head's and ignited the left side and was all rewired by a guy i personly have work on my camaro , i did not talk to this man yet he is a hard one to get a hold of. most of the interior is out of the car but its there and i haven't seen under the car yet but he said its a 10 bolt posi (3.42's?)
it has 3ish or more rust holes in the floor's about a half inch to an inch big and needs seals for the t tops cause it currently don't have any , the hood hinges need to be replaced along with the at least a good sand and repaint of the hood (chipped / surf rust) also has a 91 deck lid like mine and sticks out a little bit from the stock , she is really dirty from sitting in his garage but whipped right off the wind shield , needs new tires and i think i heard a knock when he made left turns or cranked the wheel left , also don't have the shifter hooked up was changing gear's by the 700r's cable and pliers so i didn't get a chance to drive it cause i had to actually push him in back so he could turn around
how much do ya think i could get this for , with floor damage and unknown undercarriage damage (if any)
i asked him to try and hook up the shifter so i could bring it to a garage and put her in the air ,
how much do ya think the following would cost to replace
deck lid from 91 to 87-89's
floors in holes 9i know a body guy and hopefully he wont kill me but a good knowing oh possible how much it might cost would help)
t top seals
i am sure i am forgetting stuff , and i also kinda drag on with writing so sorry about that and thanks alot

It's worth about $150 at the crusher / recycler. In the condition you describe, $400 should buy it. Any more, walk.
Good luck

A few blemishes? And you guys are already calling it crusher material? Or a parts car? It sounds like it is far from that.

A $500 parts car, tops! This sounds like the kind of ride when what's on the surface is already this bad, you don't wanna see the rest.
Has he tossed any numbers around for what he wants?
What is your budget?
Shouldn't be to hard to find a way better ride for a little more $$$. That would save you a lot more $$$ in the long run.
PS; almost a dozen things wrong is hardly just a few blemishes! I can remove blemishes with my orbital buffer. This is a little more work.

Re: Buying an iroc, Maybe...
Des seem like a true project and some. I don't like the shifter / plyers /cabel thing. And you know rust is present but in the floor plan is kinda normal, except in a car under 39k miles. Past trans issue and a past fire issue would be a turn off for me. Just seems like too many people have been under the hood of this car. No seals on the T tops is not the end of the world except it does delaydriving right away. And on top of all of that the car interior is in parts. Plus once all of that is fixed you will need (and want) a complete paint job. I would not touch it for over $500 and then I would really have to want the car.
Re: Buying an iroc, Maybe...
Here's what you listed was bad:
Odometer reading (most like 139K and not 39K, checking the VIN history would tell you hopefully)
No proof the tranny was worked on
Fire under the hood (oil from the heads onto the exhaust, I've had oil on my exhaust before and it never caught fire. Smoked a lot? ya but never catch on fire)
Rust holes in the floorpan (you'll probably find a lot more rust elsewhere)
new weatherstripping
new hood hinges and shocks
new tires
unknown suspension problems
no shifter
Given there was no shifter, you have no idea how it drives. If simply by turning the wheel you heard knocking, that's probably a bad sign. That's a lot of bad things on a car. It's basically no more than a parts car. If you seriously want to consider having it as a project car, drive it before you even think about buying it.

Re: Buying an iroc, Maybe...
I agree with whats already been said here. If you want a project car then go for it, but i wouldnt give more than $4-500 for it. Your basically buying a 350TPI motor that just happens to come with a car. Thats the way id look at it. Dont talk yourself into it just because you want an iroc, been there done that! (on my last iroc, the one i have now is beautiful!)

Re: Buying an iroc, Maybe...
Why not? I'd sell my 89 GTA for $1000, but I KNOW nobody would pay it. Thing is, parted out, I could make more, so $1000 would be cheap, compared. Parted out, I could make more, I bet. As a parts car for my 87 GTA (and they are both white), it's a perfect parts car. I could replace any body part, and wouldn't even need to paint the parts! Hell, the GTA crosslace wheels, WITHOUT the perfectly good tires, are easily worth $400 alone. It even has an Aussie 9-bolt, disc braked rear, with the same gears. I could put the rear in, if I blew mine, and the reading on my speedo would still be spot on!
