Wheel Change

I just bought a blue 89 IROC. It has the gold wheels on it, and I want to change it to either natural finish, or like a gunmetal gray color. What do I need to do to safely remove the gold from the wheels? Media blasting? What is the best way to get a paint solution to stay on the wheels? Powdercoating, paint them when I get the car repainted? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll get pics of my car up on the site soon. Thanks!!!!

Re: Wheel Change

aircraft stripper so remove the clearcoat and paint . Then polish them or you could have them blasted and powdercoated .

Re: Wheel Change

Unless the gold is separating from the wheel, there's no reason to remove it at all. Sand it and paint the new color directly over the gold. The new color will stick to the gold (if it's sanded properly) better than primer will stick to bare metal.

Re: Wheel Change

Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure if there was special paint for the wheels or not. The gold paint is fine, just doesn't look good to me on the blue car. Thanks again for the info. It will be a while before I tackle the wheels. Lots of other projects on the car to be taken care of first ! LOL!!!
